Is There A Book Within ........

Perhaps it was an outlet for a young boy , or the manifestation of knowledge alone . I'm not sure where it all began but once long ago I walked into a library and caught the scent of ........A room full of shelves .......and on those shelves , books! Since that small ,small moment in time , that day of spring , I have tried to quench a thirst and , a never ending thirst . I'm not even sure of the titles of the first ones , but more the moods of the boy who had begun reading them .
I remember actually becoming comepletely enthralled by the written words . Oh , of course we studied the bible and had some of the usual stories of the day read to us by our mother, and those too were important steps in the process! But , when and why did I actually become a reader . Like so many of you , I'm sure, It was an escape for me , an escape from the realities of life , of day to day school activities and human interactions.
Yes, that's it I'm sure , for me at least that was the driving force behind the planting of a seed , if you will, of reading. And , I suppose , for the same reasons maybe that's why I write .
Believe me folks , I was not a great student in school , from the first grade to the third or fourth , I had "special " reading classes that I had to break away from the "regular "classes to attend. I think someone thought there was something wrong with me ! Can you imagine that? Me , ahorseback , yours truly, in special reading class.?
Anyway , today ! What can be said about today ? Other than .........HubPages!.........yes! Who knows where it all began or why but today I have to thank a couple of people for any small talent that burns here in this dim candle of light , Me ! , on a snowy winter day. So here it goes . My first grade teacher and you won't believe this , her name ! Before I tell you her name I want you to think back to a day ........long ago ......, now this isn't those who are younger , today teachers are a little more normal! , but long ago teachers had "special "names , you know the ones , the names that only a teacher could have .
Mrs , Sweetingboard , was her name . Although I'm sure that ,even if she is still around , she will forgive me . Mrs Sweetingboard was tall as I remember , long dark hair tied up in a bun , she always wore dresses below the knee . and white blouses too. Nylons were the thing then as well. She was a very serious lady and a lady she was , instilling good manors and behavior into all the little brats that surrounded her at recess. Oh my though she was pretty . I had my first , okay so maybe not my first ! But one of the first crushes on a woman , in that long ago beginning of a world of reading.
So anyway , Is there a book within me ? Who knows, I would love to think so . Perhaps a book about the life and times of a wild young country boy in the big town schools, maybe about some of the teachers that I had back then . Like Mrs.LeBrone , one of my high school student teachers and another crush ? But ! That's another story altogether. She was only a couple of years older than me , and to protect the innocent , her name has been changed !

Mrs. Sweetingboard... it sounds like a novel already! I know what you mean about discovering the world hidden inside books. The library was a wonderful place and like you, I can still remember that comfortable feel of dark wooden (yes, they were polished wood in my day) shelves that held more books than I could ever read - though I tried. I remember finding 'The Moffats" books hilariously funny when I was very young, followed by two more that I remember to this day - Tom's Midnight Garden and Beautiful Joe. I'll be on board to read your first novel!

"once long ago I walked into a library and caught the scent of ........A room full of shelves .......and on those shelves , books!" Me too for sure. I never remember a time when I didn't love books. In my earliest memory, I am reading.

And yes, there are books (plural) in you. Also, pleeeeease name a character after Mrs. Sweetingboard. I love that name and have stories in my head for her myself.

Hello!

I know exactly what you mean about libraries and books. I had back surgeries as a child, so I read alot. But even now, when I walk into the library I feel safe, and calm. I guess it is an escape from the realities of everyday. When my son was young, he said, "You never read when we go away on vacations." Aha, I was caught! Books are my "vacation" at home. I look forward to reading more of your hubs!

Mrs. Sweetingboard? Already has the makings of a good character in a novel as Silvergenes suggested. As a young girl, I too loved books and the library, and I still love reading. When I was around 13, I would escape into classical poetry and novels. I still have one English Literature book from around the 7th grade with faded pages, somewhere in a box in the garage, that gave me much comfort and escape from the world during my entire teen years.

Enjoyed this hub!

Violet Sun, Such a comfort and escape perhaps to us all in those days. I have to admit I still go to the real pages as well as the hub pages. I can't even think about eating alone , if I don't have something to read. I cant imagine life without reading. Be well my northwest friend.
