It Happened All at Once

Twenty years of her life

She had devoted to one love

He was her morning and her night

He was the joy

That gave her life meaning

Holding her when the storms came

And laughing with her

When times were good

They never had children

But then they never worried

They were blessed with a love

That was so very divine

There could be nothing finer

Than a day spent strolling hand in hand

Followed by candlelit dinners

And fine wine

Nights filled with passion and ecstasy

They enjoyed so many things

They were so much alike

There was nothing that she missed

He filled her life with meaning

`She remembered sunrises

That delighted them both

And sunsets which made them sigh

A mutual love for the quiet of the countryside

And the beauty of nature

They never worried

About the years moving on

It was alright

And seemed that they would never grow old

It was as fine a love story

That could ever be told

For them one could sing

About love’s glory

She hadn’t a clue

Not a single doubt

She loved him and he loved her

She went over and over

All that troubled her mind

One fine summer’s day

A picnic by the lake

Dancing in the garden

And making love under the stars

When the morning sun awoke her

And sleepily she reached for him

The bed was cold and empty

And she stumbled to look for him

The house was as silent as a tomb

And then she saw the letter

Propped up by the door

All it said was that he had a journey to take

Something that weighted heavy on his mind

Something about unfulfilled promises

Something about forgotten yesterdays

As the tears began to fall

Like a sudden summer shower

She knew deep in her heart

He had gone and wasn’t coming back

It was then and there

That she decided

No, she didn’t want to know

What had taken him away

Perhaps an old love

Perhaps a secret he held

But the pain inside of her

And the shattering of her heart

Wouldn’t let her ask why

All she wanted was to lie down and die

But faced with a fickle love

Faced with this betrayal

She knew she would survive

The tears would someday subside

And she’d find the kind of love she deserved

One that held no malice

One that would forever be true

She just had to wait out the pain

Dry all the tears

And look forward to a new tomorrow

And perhaps a new love round the bend

Very dramatic poem with the sad reality of lost love, when it "all happened at once!"

This one was a surprise ending but sadly realistic and honest. As always from yourself; excellent poetry.

I like the ending of providing some hope. The flow is just right.

Gypsy Rose Lee,

All at once, my emotions, flooding. The love and hope, pain and heartache, strength and survival. Beautiful! This certainly has it all and there are moments in there that I can truly understand.

Thanks for the Whitney song too!

Ughhh,,, I didn't see that coming! A dear Jane letter? Even though I was disappointed in the ending, it was an awesome write! Great imagination, although I can't help but wonder if it was fiction or a past experience. Either way thank you for the story!

Well, I guess that explains why the song seemed so fitting! It was the perfect song... you did well writing something that honored it accordingly. :D

This poem is tightly woven. You made the reader feel kind of like she lost what she thought would be a forever love along with your persona. Your setup was right on. Voted Up!

Best Always,

I had no clue this beautiful love story would take such a sad turn. It goes to show that even with love, we can't control things in this life. We may think things will go one way but often they don't turn out the way we wish. I am thankful for my faith for those hard times when life throws you a curve ball. Beautiful poetry my friend.

Hi gypsy-rose-lee.

Bittersweet. Not end of the world (?!) ; how fragile relationship could become when supposedly " love " failed. A lesson ( hard way ) learned often stabilizes selfreliance and a person ( each of us either by experiencing or reading) become wiser.

Voted beautiful and interesting.
