Jimi, the dog and his Sweetheart !

Updated on April 13, 2015

I had tried to write a hub this morning but couldn’t. Actually I didn’t have any topic in my mind and I just wasted half an hour doing nothing but drawing some silly pictures and then tearing the papers off and throwing them in the basket. I was fed up. I thought I would write a hub tomorrow but just a little while ago I went upstairs in my study room again and as I stood by the side of the window and looked outside, I found Jimi sitting under a tree in the field a few meters away and looking at me with his tongue out. Yes, he is no one else but my dear dog, my friend. I see him everyday but don’t know why I just now felt that I ought to write about him and so here I am making an effort.

Jimi came to our house when he was a puppy. Well, my son actually picked him up as he found him just near the house. I saw him doing that from the sitting room. He ran upstairs, hid the puppy in his room, came to the kitchen and asked Ramu, our servant-cum-cook, in a whispering voice to let him have some milk in a bowl for the puppy. I went to the kitchen and my son gave me a smile which looked so innocent. I laughed and asked him to put the bowl of milk on the floor and bring the puppy down. He was very pleased, went upstairs and came down with the puppy following him. The puppy finished the milk in no time.

‘ Dad, can we keep the puppy?’ my son asked.

My spontaneous reply was " Yes, you can." My son was delighted. The puppy was beautiful looking. My wife was in the bathroom, she didn’t like the idea to have the puppy but eventually agreed.

About half an hour later Jimi’s mother was near our door step with five of her babies.

My son looked at her, felt sorry and let Jimi go. She left with six babies following her to the field.

‘ That was very nice of you ’ I told my son and patted his back and he felt happy.

A few days after, Jimi came again and this time he entered our house, my son was then about to leave his table after doing his homework for the school. He was glad beyond measure to see the puppy. Quickly he opened the larder and brought some biscuits and Ramu was there ready with some milk. Jimi finished them off and followed my son to the sitting room and sat there. And then he’s gone again to be with his mother, brothers and sisters.

About a month after Jimi’s mother expired and the little ones were all in grief. Ramu and my son picked Jimi up and brought him home. His brothers and sisters found homes in the neighbourhood. Everyday in the morning and in the afternoon they would go the field and play under the tree.

With good diet and care Jimi became very healthy and strongest amongst his brothers and sisters. He would visit our house everyday and at any time, stay for a while, have his food, play with my son but would just not stay in the house overnight. Rest of his brothers and sisters maintained the same habit. They had a very strong unity. As they became fully grown up, no dog from outside could enter the area. Jimi started to take the leading part. He was the boss, the others seemed to obey him. Sometimes when my son went to the field for a run, Jimi would also run with him and then go back and take rest under the tree.

One day my son was down with fever. Jimi probably realized that, he came and sat on the floor and in fact stayed the night in our house which was most unusual. Next day my son was up from bed and Jimi followed hiim in the house wagging his tail in happiness.

Sitting under the tree Jimi and his gang keep an watch on our houses. One night there was an attempt of a theft in our house. They saw the thief and gave him such a chase, barking all the way, that the poor chap found no other choice but to climb on a tree. They all stayed there till the Police came early in the morning and took the thief away.

Jimi is very kind to old people in particular and he loves the children too. One afternoon an old man fell on the road following a heart attack. Jimi noticed that happening. He rushed to the spot and started to bark very loudly and came to our house, barked, ran , stopped to see that I was coming and then ran back to the spot. The gentleman was hospitalised in time and he survived the attack. He still appreciates Jimi’s help and if you ask him he will say “Jimi has saved my life.”

Jimi is extremely intelligent. He doesn’t waste his energy running around. If you see him running with his brothers and sisters following him you can be sure that there is something happening somewhere.

Recently Jimi seems to have fallen in love with a very beautiful looking cat. She sits very close to him and amazingly I found her one day carrying a fish in her mouth and sharing that with Jimi under the tree. She plays with his brothers and sisters too. Sometimes Jimi sits there, watches them play and feels happy. He seems to be very proud of his girlfriend.

Right now Jimi is not there, presumably he has gone to meet his sweetheart!
