Lament for the Day

Sermon on the Mount (Carl Bloch, 1834-1890)
Sermon on the Mount (Carl Bloch, 1834-1890)

There was a time back in the day

When the kids tuned in to peace and love;

I wonder how we lost our way—

I thought we all had had enough.

But the man is back—his wily way

Gave war and greed a way to rule;

If Jesus Christ came back today

How many Christians would play the fool?

He said: “Love your neighbor as you love yourself;

And if he smites your face then turn the other cheek.”

The pendulum has brought us round

To the land of déjà vu

Where money rules and preachers pound

The pulpit with their hateful spew:

Telling us what’s wrong and right,

What to think and how to vote;

If Jesus Christ came back tonight

How many Christians would miss the boat?

He said: “Love your neighbor as you love yourself;

And if he smites your face then turn the other cheek.”

How much more can we afford to lose

Before we learn what we once knew?

There comes a time when you must choose

Between fear and love and what to do

When the man calls you to war

And acts like greed is not a sin;

If Jesus Christ knocked at the door

How many Christians would let him in?

He said: “Love your neighbor as you love yourself;

And if he smites your face then turn the other cheek.”

Postscript

I wrote this song in the fall of 2004, in the weeks leading up to W's re-election. Unfortunately, it is still relevant.

    Did you ever imagine that it would come to this? As we teeter at the edge of the abyss, say good-bye to the grand illusion of unending progress that made it so easy to ignore the growing mess.

    I love music. I like all genres (well, disco not so much, and ditto for gangsta rap); especially bluegrass, swing, and jazz; but most of all, rock and roll....

Joy, the problem is they do not know that they need to know how to love them self. If one does not love them self,then how can they even love anyone else. This is the problem everywhere. People do not love them self, If they hate them self, if they can not forgive, if the hold hate in their hearts for any reason, how can they love others.

It says to love as you love yourself.

We have a lot of work to do on our selves.

Loved your poem, it is beautiful. :D voted and danced on your tabs. :D hugs :D Aloha :D

Thank you Sa'ge--you are spot on.

When I recorded this song a few years ago I added a harmony vocal just over the words "love yourself". Although it wasn't my conscious intent, it added emphasis to those words, such that when I heard them sung it occurred to me that the second part of the equation (loving yourself) is just as important as (and like you say, a pre-requisite for) the first part (loving your neighbor).

Kathryn--thank you, I'm glad you like it!

Sa'ge--it appears that you read and responded to my last comment before I finished editing it, lol:-} For everyone else: what I wrote (then deleted) was that one of these days I will figure out how to make youtube videos out of the recordings of my songs so I can post them with the lyrics. Thanks for the encouragement Sa'ge!

Oh, gosh, it's not at all hard to make videos. All you need is a camera - the rest is easy.

I know Pc. I've got the camera. What I don't have yet is a good concept. I don't want videos of me playing, but rather a montage relevant to the theme of the song. So it's another creative project that will require some time...

Actually, come to think of it I probably don't even need the camera; I could use images gathered from the web...

Joyus, excellent! I wonder if people like Perry or Bush will ever get it. But a politician with humility? I don't think that's going to happen.
