Leaving Her Yesterdays Behind

The years had flashed by

Years which she had spent

Telling him about all that she was doing

Telling him that their love was forever

It seemed like only yesterday

That he had left her

The yesterday that always

Stayed in her mind

Her children had always told her

To go on, to find another love

And she would always tell them

That there was only one true love

She asked them if they loved their father still

And when they replied

She said so do I

Never could anyone

Replace the love she had lost

Never could anyone take his place

Day in and day out

She played a game

How much she could remember

And put the pieces together

There was the joy of first meeting

And how she had felt

First kisses and first hand holding

The day he told her he loved her

And she wasn’t yet sure

The day he asked her to marry him

And how it had felt

The joy they had shared

As their daughter then son

Came into this world

She never had any doubts

Not with him

Their love was a sure thing

And they went on together

How he had held her

When the children had grown

Grown and gone away

And told her not to cry

Told her that now

They could begin again

As when their love was new

And how wonderful the days were then

Just the two of them again

How he’d felt

When the first grandchild came

Not ready to stop living

Not ready for the rocking chair

And she’d laughed and told him

He was the same to her

As the day they had met

It always was at this point

That she remembered their last dance

How handsome he had looked

And how happy they had been

At first she had been angry

And then scared

Then she just didn’t feel a thing

It was the day when he’d gone away

Not good-bye just silence

As the angels spirited him away

Then she had just gone on

Knowing that she would live

Remembering and loving him

Until they’d meet again

So here she sat

The only place she felt close to him

In their garden, in their home

It was then that she realized

How odd she felt indeed

But it was alright

Really it was

As she looked up and saw

Him offering his hand

And she gave it to him

So confidently and trustingly

Then from somewhere

Music began to play

And they began to dance

Dance straight up to the heavens

Her children had never seen her so radiant

So beautiful when they found her

There was a smile upon her lips

But she was no longer there

She was with her love

Swinging upon a star

This reminds me of my mother. My fater died 25 years ago and she is very content to live alone with only her memories. For some, this is enough. Beautifully written. Thank you.

This takes my breath away for so many reasons. My Mom living without my Dad in much the same way as you describe and many other people and situations.

There is only one true love and you've beautifully portrayed it here.

Voted up, awesome, beautiful, and interesting. Shared too.

So beautifully written. At first we don't know why or how he has gone, so we are slowly taken along with the story until lovely climax. Gentle and true to life.
