Let Your Light Shine
"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works..." Book of Matthew
Each one of us is unique. When I was in the fifth grade one of the nuns, after chuckling over something I'd done said, "Mary, you are a unique individual." I had no idea what unique meant so I went home and looked it up. "Unique...highly unusual, rare, one of a kind"
That was certainly me, "one of a kind." But, you know what? You're one of a kind too. Think about it. Definition time again, "One of a kind...an unusual person, thing or event." Yup, you are. Is there anybody else EXACTLY like you? I don't think so.
America's Got Talent - Anna Graceman
No one was born at the exact moment in the exact month on the exact day in the year you were born...and if they were they are still a different person! (I added the latter for the pragmatists reading this.) You are one of a kind. Your parents, your atmosphere, your relatives...all different from someone else who helped to form you into the unique individual you are. Do you know where this is going?
Well, now that we have established you are one of a kind, what about that light shining within? Light? Yes, that light is your talent. Got talent? A talent you have that you may or may not even know exists. We all have talents, some hidden more than others but we all have them. Each of us has a talent that has grown with us and helps our light to shine. Knowing what that talent is enables us to use it and nourish it. It will always grow if you let it shine! If you bury it it can whither and die as if it never existed.
What is your talent?
What is your talent? There are some that are obvious, a writer, a painter, a singer, a gymnast, a fashion designer, a doctor, a nurse or a teacher. What about someone who plays an instrument, or fixes cars, or maybe you're someone who can really dance or speak several languages. These are all pretty obvious talents.
But there are others that are not always so obvious. Maybe you're a good cook or baker; maybe you take good pictures or you're really computer savvy! Yet, there are more talents:
Still not seeing your talent? There is so much more...talent that lets your light shine.

What about your talent to be a great Mother or Father? Your talent to be understanding and/or sympathetic? Do you have a talent for managing money well? Are you loyal to your friends? What about thinking outside the box or the ability to analyze a situation and do it well? Of course there are the optimists, yes that's a talent...always seeing the good...what about being flexible? There are people who won't change for anything so being flexible is a talent. Maybe you're a neat freak...to those who can't get organized this is certainly a talent.
Call them talents, call them gifts, call them your light, whatever you call them each of us has them. Learning that we have, being proud of what our talent is, and learning to use them, all add to the light that shines from you...your special light. Using your talent, like loving, will make others happy but it will also make you happy. If you know and use your talent and let your light shine you will be content, not struggling all the time looking for something. You will have found that something, within yourself.
Don't minimize your talents...they may be talents you were born with or talents you fought hard to aquire but they are still yours, your light that shines before the world. You are good and you are good at something, Susanna Kaysen says, "survival is a talent"! I guess its all in the way you look at it, but you know you have a talent!
This Little Light of Mine - song starts at 1:22
Let your light shine
So now that you're convinced you have a talent (you are convinced right?), how about letting it shine for all the world to see. No more hiding it or ignoring it. No more pretending you don't have it...let it out...let it shine.
Let the world know you can get through tough times, that you have hope to see you through. Show the world the twinkle in your eye and your sense of humor. Share yourself with your family and friends in the good times and the bad. Impress people with how nice and caring you are by going the extra mile....Take the time to know yourself and your talents and let your light shine for all the world to see!
