Life Never Promised

Isn't it funny we're so much the same

Fruit of passions that began with a flame

Love rocked the cradle in our name

Still, life never promised a perfect game

============================

Hope meets the wall in the picture frame

Seen in defiance that living will tame

Cooked the books for our share of shame

Life never promised a perfect game

===========================

A symphony plays the song we became

Chance the backup holding no blame

Fat lady hits the high note to acclaim

Life never promised a perfect game

===========================

The sun cast light without conscious aim

Absence in a choice to bless or inflame

A gift to embrace or curse in defame

Life never promised a perfect game

===========================

Isn't it sad that we're so much the same

Sacrificed the years like martyrs who proclaim

In the end when peace seems the only just claim

Life never promised a perfect game

===========================

I loved the flow of this poem here, it's truly a great read, and I know my life hasn't been perfect no way no how, and so I can relate to this overall theme here.

Voted up on all levels accept for funny. Nice!

Awwww, Pop, that is a beautiful thing to say. Amidst all the passion your writing inspires, lives the soul of a poet. Thank you, my beautiful friend.

Your poem speaks the truth, Amy, dear,

It struck a note when I read it here.

None of us desire pain and strife,

It just comes with living our life.

But all else in life being relative,

It is better than the alternative.

"Love rocked the cradle in your name." That is some kind of beautiful writing. If I could write one line like that per week I would be elated.....your words are so damn powerful....you are a powerhouse generator of emotions and images.

You are what poetry should always be.

love and hugs,

bill

Ah yes, Mike and The Living Years. Been living that song for I don't know how long. There is no perfect game my dear, just life as we live it as imperfectly as we can.

Like a lot of people, I had to lose most of what I'd worked to attain to come to the truth that life is never perfect...for anyone. Eventually, we all get bit in the ass. We either accept the truth and learn from it or go off the deep end and make it worse. There is no escape. I've learned and adjusted my attitude along with my priorities. "You can live without anything you weren't born with, and you can make it through on even half of that" a quote by Gloria Naylor. Right on!

And along the way Amy help those who you can until they bite your hand. A good code to live by my friend.

I've lost count of my favorite Amy lines as there are so many hundreds of them now.

Hope meets the wall in the picture frame

Seen in defiance that living will tame.

Wow. another great poem, another searing commentary on games, masks and lights and shadows. You're a master at this.

Oh, thank you so much, Docmo. You are far too generous, but nonetheless, your words make my heart beat faster. It is a thrill to hear so much positive from a writer of your extraordinary abilities. You give me great courage.

I am at a loss for words with this, Amy. The picture this poetry conjurs is one of an ending that isn't as 'pretty' as these players would have wished. I love the "perfect game" metaphor. All effort was put forth to load the dice, stack the deck. We live as much in our imaginations and hopes as we do in this world. And we try to make it manifest...those dreams and desires. I think, in the end; there will always be that which we missed; mistakes we made, roads not taken. Exceptionally poetic, right on and real, Amy...YOU have a gift. Now, go make a little $ with it, will you!! that's an order!

"We live as much in our imaginations and hopes as we do in this world" says it all like the poet you are, Kathy. I'm taking your order to heart, because the reality is that even a poet needs to eat. Beyond that, Kathy, if I never try to compile my own book of poetry, I will live to regret the road not taken. I appreciate your nudge in the direction of realizing my dream.
