The Loon River Blues........

A river poem

I camped once in the silent forest
of towering pines at dusk
The smell of the wood fire burning
giiving forth a pleasant musk

I watched the lightened reflections of a
setting sun in the waters of blue
Silver shimmers of wind dancing on
a rocky river running through

And a valley...... just one though among many
and silence but for the river
And the solitude alone almost strangling me
a fleeting breath .....a final shiver

It was all I could think of then too
just let it all end here
Just as the cool autumn air began to waft
from the pines yawning near

As darkness and silence began to arrive
and just as I was about to go in
The night began it's own haunting dance
as the singing loons chimed in

One on each end of a long slow flowing
current toning out in primal voices
And I realized in a humbled awakening
that life is all about choices

Why do I ?.......we waste it all slaving away
and miss this serenity ..... soothing..... stroking
The dinner on the fire .........and the
crackling camp fire smoking

And then just at once the dogs noses lifted to
the breeze and froze
But nothing .......just before they flop over
and sigh ...... time for dusk and a dreamy doze

I look at them again when the
lonesome loons call out
But all they do is listen......twitching ever slightly
their nose ......evening is about

There is no loon river that I know of
but I have a good mind to rename
Any place I can listen to the loons
it always feels the same

Cardisa , It is a haunting call especially in the night, and the loon ,long endangered , is making a comeback in many parts of the country! They actually nest their young right on the waters edge of ponds ,rivers ,and lakes. Very suseptable to flooding waters and storms at birthing time!..They are beautiful as well to watch. ...:-}

This was so beautiful!! It reminded me of a trip I once took to the Adirondack Mountains, to Loon Lake. There is something so haunting about the call of the loons.

Very descriptive, but your phrasing could be improved.

Once I camped in a silent forest,

Of towering pines at dusk.

The smell of the camp fire burning,

Gave forth a pleasant musk.
