Longing for Home

Longing for home

For this roving Gypsy

Means wanting to stray back

To the places of childhood

To the days of youth

To the place of my birth

To New York City

Perhaps to tango down Broadway

To go back to my roots

And sometimes the feeling is so strong

I’m not a small town girl

Never had a Main Street

But I had the sights and sounds

Of a city that never sleeps

Nestled in the quiet of Bay Ridge

Where by the water’s edge

You could see the skyscrapers of Manhattan

Reaching far up into the clear blue sky

Some say that going home again is just a myth

That what we’ve got is what must be

But I would still love to stray

Through the streets of the city

That I grew to love

And my hungry heart

Longs for what it no longer has

To fill my eyes

With the pictures I’m longing to see

To find comfort

For my restless Gypsy soul

And perhaps someday

Settle down in my hometown

To remember and recapture

Those moments so fine

Of friends and family

And adventures so divine

Some say that they don’t miss what they left behind

But I know for me

Every street corner and every park

Even the waterfront

Will show me films played only in my mind

And I’ll be glad to retrace

The memories I left behind

I experienced going home once. I was 21 and hadn't been back in England since I was 5. I stepped off the plane at Heathrow and was hit with the feeling of being "home". This absolute feeling of belonging lasted the six months I was there, but I had to go back to where I lived. I've made several trips back and still feel a sense of home but have never experienced that intense feeling I had when I was young. Voted beautiful for reminding me of "home".

The HubPage gives a kind of medium, where writing gains an additional dimension with the poet's choice of music or images. Rose, it is not only for the gypsy at heart, but most, that there is always some kind of going back home, metaphorically. Fine expression. Voted up.

Gypsy - You've, once again, created a wonderful poem. Bittersweet longing.

Wonderful

Dear Gypsy, Having never seen New York City, just having heard about it, what I know leaves me with an impression that is intimidating, big, crowded, bustling and exciting. I grew up not far from where I live now, in St. Louis, Missouri. I would imagine those that haven't been here, and probably many that have for a visit, find the rural areas "backwoods" and scary on the mean streets of the city. My brother moved to Davis, CA, with his family and calls it home. My sister moved many years ago to live and work in Honolulu, HI and calls it home. I am helping my elderly mom now and every time I pull into her driveway, I feel like I'm in a different world, although I'm live only 40-minutes drive time away, I am back home. No matter who we are and where we end up, for the majority, there's no place like home. Your words describe the feeling perfectly. Up and awesome.

Thanks for your comment myownlife. Yes wishes are one thing but the doing another. And would it really be the same or would it disappoint?

Thank you for your comment UnnamedHarald. Glad it reminded you of home and going back. You know as much as I have this desire I don't know how I would feel stepping off the plane but I do know that if the feeling was strong enough of coming home I would have that overwhelming feeling of crying for joy.

Thank you so much for your great comment and the vote Amy. There is that saying home is where the heart is. I don't know how St. Louis is as a city but I've always had a desire to see it because of the musical with Judy Garland "Meet Me in St. Louis".

Been away from home for 6 long years and the longing to be there is unstoppable. our most comfortable zone, Home, no matter how far fate takes us, there, we'll always go back and the longing ends. looking forward to that.

Gypsy, I've always wanted to see New York - I've never been there. It must have been great growing up there. A friend of mine from there says she always misses it. I guess it gets in your blood. Great poem.

Voted up and awesome.

Thanks for commenting and the vote Ann. Yes New York is the type of place that once it's home it's always home. Someday I hope to get back there. You should definitely take a trip and see it all in its crazy and wonderful glory.
