Love So Evergreen

Their love was evergreen

always like freshly fallen snow

they found something new

in the love they shared

never a season passed

that they didn’t find

a reason for celebrating

the love that was their’s

came the day when time seemed to stop

there were less words to say

it seemed that they were drifting apart

and as much as he wanted to

he couldn’t find the anchor

couldn’t make it all stop

it seemed there was something

that she was seeking

and she was willing to let go of their love

he wondered if his heart could take it

if he could go on and make it

but she was determined

and before he knew it

she was out the door and gone

for a few years he tried to find her

just for comfort

just to be sure she was alright

then life had to go on

and he found a new love

it gave him joy and wonder

but it was no longer evergreen

as the years drifted by

and silver strands sprinkled his hair

the children grew

and grandchildren came

he was often sorry

that he wasn’t able

to give his new love

the eternal kind of love she deserved

but she was content

as long as he was by her side

so life went on

sure and steady

yet there was still an emptiness in his heart

he did his best to explain

and she was wonderful

her life was complete

and she wanted it to be so for him

so they both began to search

for his elusive love

just so he would have peace of mind

it was she who made the discovery

that his first love

now made heaven her home

so he made the journey

to offer his final blessings

to her hometown

to discover what her life had been like

it felt strange to get off of the train

with a bouquet of her favorite yellow roses

and head for the cemetery

it was there that discovery astounded him

his first love had died

a year after she had left him behind

when he returned home

it was with a truly changed heart

with the understanding of love never ending

his evergreen love had flown

to save him from the pain

of watching her die from day to day

from cancer from which she could not be saved

and so now he embraced his new love

and finally gave to her

all the love that had lain dormant in his heart

he was now ready to make her

his evergreen love

and she was ever grateful

to a woman she had never known

but one so unselfish

to sacrifice her love

to save another from events

that couldn’t be stopped

and now they could count their blessings

as children and grandchildren drew near

cherishing the new found love they shared

Rasma, this gave me goosebumps. Thankfully, the man left behind discovered the truth in time to open his heart and pour his love into his new love.

Beautiful story!

Beautiful Rasma. It was like a poem, but it also felt like a bitter-sweet memory or fairy tale. Lovely. Hope all is well. Theresa
