Mask- A Poem About Mental Illness

Mask

It's a difficult task

To carry on each day

To hide behind this mask

Dark and grey.

What everyone sees

Is just a lie

It's hard to breathe

Hard not to cry.

Each day is a battle of wills

And how much longer this strength will last

If I could just remain still

And forget about the past.

But it's an addiction

And no one sees

Me in this position

About to bleed.

I need to end this

And for a while I do

But the pain brings me bliss

When I feel I can't make it through.

I hide behind this mask,

But someday I know it will happen.

I'll get the strength to ask

For help again.

The mask will be removed

And people will see my face

The tears I've cried,

The path they trace.

I want no pity, I never have

I just want help

To get off this path.

Show no sorrow when you see the truth

Just hold my hand as we walk

We can speak of our youth

Then I'll open up and talk

I'll tell you my story

In grave detail

But do not worry

I know I will not fail.

For when this mask is gone

I'll know then that I am strong

But I want no pity, I never have

I just want help

To get off this path.

Thanks for sharing. The path of recovery from mental illness begins with sharing. The more you speak about it the more you release and the healing begins. I needed this more than you know. Voted up and awesome!

Oh, the mask, how well the mask is worn, you did an awesome job describing the mask of so many. I will hope that the mask is removed someday.
