Mike and God Battle for Me

Thoughts of a cancer patient

I saw you from across the room

Your dancing was sexy and fine

The cutest boy in the place

Much too young to be mine

I didn’t want you, but you came along

Persistent as can be

I finally relented and gave in

Even tho that wasn’t like me

You were just so cute; I couldn’t resist

I wouldn’t allow a sense of permanence

But you’re so funny and we laughed so much

All in all you took up residence

One day we drank dinner at The Quay

As usual we laughed, ate and drank

You said you wanted to marry me

And we cracked up as if it were a prank

We knew it was destined forever

Forever it’s him and me

We had kids, we had cats, we had dogs

We put birdhouses in the trees

You held me when I cried so hard

I bawled and sobbed on your shirt

In happiness tears add to the mix

Till my make up looked more like dirt

One day the doc was mistaken

He said I had cancer that kills

Gave me six months and dilaudid

He said keep positive, it’s a test of wills

It was a fight to the very finish

But we kicked cancer’s ass once again

Me, the sickly victim patient

Mike and God fought for me till the end

God gave me a guardian angel

Who’s name is Mike, for short

You cradled me like a baby

And cushioned my fall from the porch

You're there at all the extremes

The life-changing moments of mine

When the Good Lord thinks I need watching

I try not to step out of line

If Prayer can take away cancer

Then that’s exactly what happened to me

You prayed in terms and pictures

And got rid of the tragedy

The doctors were all amazed

Some wanted to take their own look

Cancer doesn’t just go away, and surprised,

What they got was more than they took

And you were there, holding my hand

Through all the ugly and unfair

You’re still holding my hand

Even though I’m not still there.

Thank you for love

Thank you for life

I’ve lived very happy

In the roll as your wife.

I love you.

I loved this...such a touching tribute to your husband's love and God's care. You have a strong writing "voice."
