I try to go quietly,
to not upset the air.
Even so, my feet fall
loudly across the wooden
landscape of an empty house.
I don’t know how long
my life has filled
these corridors, not long
it seems, but maybe a lifetime.
Curtains droop sadly in the windows,
like eyelids of a sleepy child,
as I pull away through the trees
onto Mountain Road.
