Mustangs In The Canyon.......

Short Story ........

I crawl carefully to the edge of the rim and look over the edge , raising my head higher and higher untill I see what I came here for. The herd of wild mustang horses , and the government men rounding them up. Now , they're circling around the herd to begin the drive , a dozen or so mounted men all spaced evenly around the back of the herd as they push the horses in towards the gates of the shutes. The funnel of fencing leading directly into the corrals below this wall . Where the horses will then be sorted ,vaccinated , examined head to toe and made ready for trucking to various outlets around the country . Some will end up in fine homes , well cared for and perhaps even adopting themselves to a new herd only , only one of the human kind. Others , will be selected for disposal , you know the ones, determined too wild to be "broken" , those having behavior traits as to be determined dangerous or too unattractive for adoption . I always have wondered just where they do end up . I know , the old stories , send them all to the "glue factory" , or to Australia where they will be ground up and used for dog food and then shipped around the world to the markets that sell the food in fifty pound bags right next to the cages that hold cuddly little puppies , exotic bird cages and pet leashes .

That's just about where I come in to the picture, I don't have the power, at least enough to stop this act of government , but I do have the power to do something right now , even if it's "wrong " in some peoples eye's. I can change or at least alter the outcome , at least for a time . I can disrupt this whole operation at least for days and weeks , maybe even months and if I can do that maybe I can even affect this trade for seasons .

My passion is to keep these mustangs right here where they belong , where they have always belonged , in these canyons , the last hold out ! The American mustang has been pushed and prodded right into an isolation and have adopted too! To the places where man has chosen not to build his strip malls , his circles and circles of cute little housing projects , you know the ones , canyon loop , forest mesa or desert drive , they have adapted to the last remaining wild places and they've done it all in silence , without a voice , well tonight they will finally get the chance to speak out .

Looking through the binoculars , I can see the portable fence system all laid out in holding pens , the chutes where they will be driven in and then locked down for the nights and days that follow . But , tonight .....tonight will be different . Behind me , I hear my own horse stomping impatiently in the shade of the aspens where I left him tied to a deadfall . he too , wants this thing to end , sitting here and watching this has made us both more than ready to jump into action .

" Patience my good man ..... patience ........" your hour will come , after dusk when the hands all leave for the day or two , then we will begin to see the dust coming up through the canyons signaling the arrival of the trucks and trailers that will begin the hauling away of the mustangs , but little they know ! There will be no horses for them to haul away to places unknown...... I don't even want to think of what would happen to some of them.......

As dusk approaches I make my way to the lower ledges of the rim walls , being careful not to leave footprints I stay on the rocky outcroppings .......everyone has left the canyon , and as I begin taking down sections of the fence I watch as the horses all pull away from me gathering in groups away from where I work away at my task. I have to be careful to make sure no tracks or evidence remains , the tracks from the mustangs should cover everything , I want to make it look like they pushed the fences down on their own

Finally ,...........the split rails fallen away ....... the mustangs circling .......getting more and more worked up now as they rear up , shake their heads back and forth . Bounding in the dust clouds lit by the moonlight ....the pounding of hooves like thunder , and finally ............
I jump to safety just as the herd bolts as one into the open range , thunder of hooves earsplitting as they .......all of them! Every last horse now forever free .

And now as I stand here listening as the rumbling dies away in the canyon.......I know .
No matter what happens now I have done all I can...........

I wish I was there! I love horses and I hate when wild horses are forced to be domesticated or sent to the "glue factory". Good going Ahorseback, loved it!

And that is what we must all do...take a stand and make a difference, even if in only one life. After all every life is precious. I know this is fiction but also know it happens all the time. You sure have a great heart and deep compassion ahorseback.

YES!!! ahorseback! YES! You are my hero. You understand this are to be blessed..if it were in my hands; I'd bestow upon you the most amazing of gifts of gratitude. What a fabulous've educated, explained and acted...what more can one do? I just love this...I would have done the same thing (and HAVE...on another scale in another place...and will do so, again; when faced withg the ugliness that humans perpetrate upon animals...aninals who are simply living out their lives as they should; they must...they were destined to do. I am deeply impressed. All UP's w/out a doubt!!!

Okay, ahorseback, what the heck are these designations? Ugh? Hub Author? Leveled commentators? I am not amused.

I feel like a red headed mustang, rounded up and labeled "For the Glue Factory"!
