Brother in Arms............A Tribute

My big brother

Not much more than a boy were you then
and away you were called
proud and beautiful in
t
he colors of soldier blue
tall in shadow
so alive in spirit
and smile

The men behind the shadows waited patiently
they taught you all the attributes
of the killing machines
dropped the blades of the choppers
against the green hills of
the killing fields
and left you alone

And never to return again was this boy
his laugh his touch or kindhearted
ways as they once were
the jackals grinned from ear to ear
the ironclad knights stood
in unison and saluted
your leaving

The prayers were answered and home you came
at least what was left over
a tortured soul
and in solitude you healed as we watched
this in only your own fashion
and no other way

No days I look in the eye's of that soldier
and see an echo of a smile
from ions ago and I feel lucky
that boy my brother is back
I feel love and I know
you feel it too

For years no one knew how to say it
and I too failed you
no one could be sure you were
actually here and yet
I'm so happy I said it years ago
and meant it too

Welcome home

Maybe I cry a bit too easily. Then again just maybe this touched my heart so deeply that it deserved a few tears. I will call my big brother today and make sure I tell him how much I love him. Thank you.

Very heartfelt and touching poetry. The heart teaches, and more effective so, after the fact. It is then it longs and cries for better days.

You know dad, you and this particular uncle remind me of the song by The Hollies.. " he ain't heavy, he's my brother!!" Love this tribute of honor, respect and pride for your big brother, and would expect no less from a man of your integrity!
