My Friend the Spider-a Short Story for Kids

On a farm in the northern part of my state, there was a little puppy whose name was Puppy. He always felt alone since all his brothers and sisters had gone to other homes to play with their little masters.

The puppy spent most of the day wandering all over the farm and getting into trouble. Always being inquisitive as puppies often are, he had asked some chickens why they were as they were; he had asked some pigs the same and then the cows turn came. None were able to give him a response that made any sense to him.

One fine day, as fine days go, he came upon a lowly tree with some low hanging branches. To his surprise there was an amazing spider web that glistened in the morning dew.

Upon taking a closer look he was further surprised when he spied a bunch of little yellow balls and next to them a beautiful black tiny spider.

“Hello” said the spider, and “hi” replied Puppy. What are you doing? Said the puppy, to where the spider replied “I’m just hanging around waiting for an insect to fall on my web and I can eat it.” “Yuck” the puppy uttered.” “Why would you eat bugs!” He kept on. “Well…you see, most animals like you and me are made different and we each have a special way of feeding and each eats what nature tell us to”. “Well I guess that’s OK. Can I come and visit you every day, since I feel lonely most of the time?” Puppy uttered in a shy voice. “You may come as often as you like, but I won’t be here for long, for you see, once those little yellow balls hatch I will be gone.” The spider hurriedly said. “Why? Are you planning to take a trip.” little Puppy wondered out loud.

After a few moments the little spider replied "Yes but it’s part of my life cycle, it’s what mother nature intended to do and I’m happy to oblige.” the spider replied.

“Can I come visit when you come back? Puppy told the spider. “I’m afraid that this time I will not be coming back, for you see life is wonderful and we go through it best as we can, but there is another trip which all must take and but that is just another journey.”

“OK I guess that you need to take this trip butt I am happy to at least get to talk to you.” Puppy replied and went about his business.

For several week puppy came to visit the spider every day, and they chatted for hours, the spider being the older and wiser entertained every single question the puppy had, and Puppy left happy everyday looking forward to their next encounter.

On a Sunday afternoon, as our little puppy approached the spider’s home, he was overcome with happiness as he saw hundreds of little black spiders crawling all over the branch as well as the spider’s web. “Hey… wow! You are all spiders’ children?” “Yes we are and now must feed for we are very hungry and no insects have come.” They all said in unison.

“What about your mother? Won’t she feed you?” The inquisitive puppy told them.

“She is our food. When we are born, the temperature and weather is not good for insects and most have gone. So our mother makes the sacrifice and dies for us to survive. Isn’t our mother wonderful, taking care of us this way? We love her so much and one day we will also do the same for our children. We must go now and feed for we are very hungry” the little ones happily said.

Puppy was mad and sad at the same time. He couldn’t understand why her friend had to die, after all his mother had not died. “Why oh why did she have to die, I will miss our chats”.” He quietly thought.

At that moment he heard a little voice calling out to him, “you can still come and talk to us. Even thought we were not born when our mother was here with you, we feel what she felt and we feel that you two were good friends. She is taking a journey which we must all take and when our turn comes we would like to tell her that we too were your friends.”

Puppy could not really understand what this journey was, but he was glad that spider had left him some friends. He took care of them, he talked with them every day, and although was not looking forward to the day of their journey, he was at peace with himself for there was some hope, he thought, that he would one day see his friend the spider again. After all he thought “this journey that we must all take was a part of life and all creatures big and small will one day meet at journey’s end.”

He did not know when or where it would be his time to take his journey but he was glad for having met his friends and looked forward to their next chat.

As the day had grown older and the night finally came, he went back to his home and next to his mother he laid.

As his eyes slowly closed, he could not help but be glad of the time he had spent and the chats he had had with his little black friend and with a smile on his lips, he muttered “one day, one day.”

peachpurple; Thank you. BTW not all spider species go through the death of the female after birth cycle.
