My Ode to Nellieanna (a tribute)
A Humbling Experience
Being selected by my peers here at Hub Pages for the "Best Poet" accolade in this years "Hubbie Awards" was more than just acknowledgement of my dedication to poetry. It was a humbling experience and made me reflect on the fact that I am still here at Hub Pages and writing at all.
Believe it or not, I joined Hub Pages and published my first hub "In Search of Self-Sufficiency"on 9th September 2009. I think that hub received four comments and half a dozen views in the first year. On 31st December 2010 I wrote my second hub "Winning Ways." It was even less popular and attracted two comments in total until seven months ago. Then on 14th February 2011 I published my first collection of poetry "Love and Other Muses". I had been proud of the poems I included in this collection, but was disappointed when this hub also only received a handful of views and one comment.
So, between September 2009 and February 2011 I had published only three hubs. I had no real idea how Hub Pages worked at that stage and decided to start investigating exactly what the site was about. I had only read a few other hubs myself at this stage and hadn't become involved in the community. Being a poetry fan I decided to read a few poetry hubs and get an idea of the type of work other hubbers were producing.
I just happen to choose to read a hub written by a lady known as "Nellieanna". Try as I might I can't remember exactly which one it was, but I know the quality of the poetry amazed me and I decided to leave a comment complimenting the author on her wonderful words.
One of my favourite songs. I think Nellieanna would like it.
Nellianna's profile says:
An ageless, multi-faceted woman whose personal website "Oasis" tells some of her story, - the story continuing further here on Hubpages, since she's an 'artist of life' who loves to write about it. An especially great honor was being voted 'Hubpages Poet of the Year' by members in late 2013.
My First Follower
The next thing I know was that I received notification that my own hub "Love and Other Muses" had received a comment:
Nellieanna :11 months ago from TEXAS
"What an inviting, charming, and meaningful hub! It's poetry in the truest sense! (I couldn't resist checking the hub behind that gorgeous tree silhouetted against the sunset!
And now I see, below the comment window, more I must read! I think I'd advise placing the comment capsule at the very end of the actual hub content, jodah - to avoid people missing some of your lovely work! Usually we expect the comment window to be the conclusion of a hub, you see. My comments above were just about the first, The Valentine Tree. Now there isn't time left on this timed comment to mention the others."
Before I received this comment I had been beginning to think I was wasting my time with Hub Pages and was seriously considering withdrawing my membership and just putting my writing on a private blog. Nellieanna kindly had decided to share my hub however and I began to get other positive comments and found myself introduced to other hubbers. I realised that there was a friendly and active community here that I had never taken advantage of joining before.
A New Inspiration to Write
I was beginning to get a new lease on life and became inspired to dip my feet deeper into the writing waters. On 28th September 2013 I published "Addicted to Books(or A Book Worm's Guide)" closely followed by "Verse for the Young at Heart" on 30th September 2013. I was inspired! Until now the only people who had read and appreciated my poetry was my wife Kathleen (who most of my poetry was written for) and a couple of close friends.
I find it hard to believe that I really only became active here at Hub Pages less than a year ago and now I have been awarded "Best Poet for 2014". It doesn't seem real, and it's all thanks to Nellieanna for her kindness and encouragement.
I recently read Nellieanna's hub: "Isn't It Romantic" As always her poetry is incredibly beautiful and I was moved to write the following poem in the comments. I thought I'd also share it here as part of it's own hub.

I chose to wander through your poems
And found these jewels aglow.
These lovely words enshrouded me,
True romance through them flows.
An artist with the poet's pen
Whose verse uplifts my heart.
You are the reason I'm still here,
You inspired me from the start.
"Best Poet" this year I received
I dedicate to you,
My writing floundered hopelessly
In my heart I know that's true,
But you saw promise in my work
Despite my many flaws.
That is why I'm here today
A poet with a cause.

Almost all human interaction involves the use of promises and lies at some level. Many people make promises but not all intend to keep them. It is quite a skill to seperate the truth from lies.
Romantic poets have been striving to write the perfect love poem since they first picked up a quill. There have been many wonderful love poems written and here I list some of them, and one of my own.
Many people don't know the value of the plants around them. Do you see a dandelion as a weed spoiling the look of your lawn, or as a wild herb packed with vitamins? Everything in nature has a purpose.
