My Ode to Nellieanna (a tribute)

A Humbling Experience

Being selected by my peers here at Hub Pages for the "Best Poet" accolade in this years "Hubbie Awards" was more than just acknowledgement of my dedication to poetry. It was a humbling experience and made me reflect on the fact that I am still here at Hub Pages and writing at all.

Believe it or not, I joined Hub Pages and published my first hub "In Search of Self-Sufficiency"on 9th September 2009. I think that hub received four comments and half a dozen views in the first year. On 31st December 2010 I wrote my second hub "Winning Ways." It was even less popular and attracted two comments in total until seven months ago. Then on 14th February 2011 I published my first collection of poetry "Love and Other Muses". I had been proud of the poems I included in this collection, but was disappointed when this hub also only received a handful of views and one comment.

So, between September 2009 and February 2011 I had published only three hubs. I had no real idea how Hub Pages worked at that stage and decided to start investigating exactly what the site was about. I had only read a few other hubs myself at this stage and hadn't become involved in the community. Being a poetry fan I decided to read a few poetry hubs and get an idea of the type of work other hubbers were producing.

I just happen to choose to read a hub written by a lady known as "Nellieanna". Try as I might I can't remember exactly which one it was, but I know the quality of the poetry amazed me and I decided to leave a comment complimenting the author on her wonderful words.

One of my favourite songs. I think Nellieanna would like it.

Nellianna's profile says:

An ageless, multi-faceted woman whose personal website "Oasis" tells some of her story, - the story continuing further here on Hubpages, since she's an 'artist of life' who loves to write about it. An especially great honor was being voted 'Hubpages Poet of the Year' by members in late 2013.

My First Follower

The next thing I know was that I received notification that my own hub "Love and Other Muses" had received a comment:

Nellieanna :11 months ago from TEXAS

"What an inviting, charming, and meaningful hub! It's poetry in the truest sense! (I couldn't resist checking the hub behind that gorgeous tree silhouetted against the sunset!

And now I see, below the comment window, more I must read! I think I'd advise placing the comment capsule at the very end of the actual hub content, jodah - to avoid people missing some of your lovely work! Usually we expect the comment window to be the conclusion of a hub, you see. My comments above were just about the first, The Valentine Tree. Now there isn't time left on this timed comment to mention the others."

Before I received this comment I had been beginning to think I was wasting my time with Hub Pages and was seriously considering withdrawing my membership and just putting my writing on a private blog. Nellieanna kindly had decided to share my hub however and I began to get other positive comments and found myself introduced to other hubbers. I realised that there was a friendly and active community here that I had never taken advantage of joining before.

A New Inspiration to Write

I was beginning to get a new lease on life and became inspired to dip my feet deeper into the writing waters. On 28th September 2013 I published "Addicted to Books(or A Book Worm's Guide)" closely followed by "Verse for the Young at Heart" on 30th September 2013. I was inspired! Until now the only people who had read and appreciated my poetry was my wife Kathleen (who most of my poetry was written for) and a couple of close friends.

I find it hard to believe that I really only became active here at Hub Pages less than a year ago and now I have been awarded "Best Poet for 2014". It doesn't seem real, and it's all thanks to Nellieanna for her kindness and encouragement.

I recently read Nellieanna's hub: "Isn't It Romantic" As always her poetry is incredibly beautiful and I was moved to write the following poem in the comments. I thought I'd also share it here as part of it's own hub.

Source

Ode to Nellieanna (and her hub "Isn't It Romantic")

by John Hansen © 2014

I chose to wander through your poems

And found these jewels aglow.

These lovely words enshrouded me,

True romance through them flows.

An artist with the poet's pen

Whose verse uplifts my heart.

You are the reason I'm still here,

You inspired me from the start.

"Best Poet" this year I received

I dedicate to you,

My writing floundered hopelessly

In my heart I know that's true,

But you saw promise in my work

Despite my many flaws.

That is why I'm here today

A poet with a cause.

What a lovely tribute to a friend and supporter. All it takes is one person to encourage you and spread the word. I am glad you did not give up. I hope others follow Nellieanna's kind leadership and pay it forward in the way she did it for you. I try to do that for people as they have done for me. Congratulations again, John!

Oh what a wonderful article of praise, thanks and acknowledgement to someone who saw your potential just as the rest of us do. I'm so glad you didn't quit after that auspicious beginning!

Congrats on your Hubbie Award - you know that I champion you and you deserve the award more than any other poet.

I always look forward to your rhymes and now that you are branching out with including some backstory behind the rhymes, it makes the read that much more enjoyable. Keep up the great work!

Dear John,

Thank you ever so much for sharing this inspirational and motivational story of how and why you stuck it out here at HubPages!

It's amazing that when I read one of my first exposures to your poetry, I commented that your caliber was 'right up there' with Nellieanna. And now it's heartwarming to realize that this lovely lady was instrumental in supporting you and sharing your talents for our community to get to know you...gracious lady that she is!

Beautiful poetic tribute to Nellieanna. Congratulations, once again on your Hubbie and may the upcoming year keep your pen flowing with creativity.

Hi Rachael, thanks for reading. I do appreciate your constant support and encouragement too.,I'm sure most of us have times when we feel like "what's the point? I'm not getting anywhere." Well that's how I was before Nellianna made me see the light. My branching out has come about partly to add substance to my poetry hubs and make them reach more of HP's requirements, but that has had a beneficial affect by adding a back story for my readers. Thanks again.

CONGRATULATIONS! You SO deserve this. What a wonderful hub about a beautiful lady, Nellianna. It is wonderful to read when a person in our hub community gives kudos to another hub writer. In my experience writing is a day to day venture...some days one can go blank, others, the pen can't stop moving. Voted up, awesome and beautiful.

Your poetry brightens this site. God bless, Sparklea :)

My dear John! I'm sitting here with my heart in my throat! I just happened to check the new publications list on my email this morning - (en route to go tend to a ranch duty of editing 14,000 pix from 6 wildlife cams we recently placed around the place down there) - and couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the title of your hub, your Ode to me, John! I'm truly humbled. It takes my breath away!

I didn't set out to attract attention to our fortuitous meeting a year or so ago, when I saw an obviously gifted writer about to give up on Hubpages, only because he hadn't circulated or hadn't BEEN well circulated around among the folks who, I was sure, would love his work and would otherwise be deprived if they'd missed it!

I'd learned first-hand the value of circulating here if one is to be known and read. Someone (DaGreek, specifically - thank you, Dimitris) boosted me when I joined, almost reluctantly, not even intending to be active. I just joined at the request of a friend (MerlinFraser) from another kind of site who had published a book & recently had joined HP, seeking support. He'd seen a few indications of my serious interest in writing and I'm sure, thought it would help me, but I hadn't been seeking help for my own writing, which was, up till then, almost totally private. I was skeptical about a place called 'Hubpages', never being a joiner or seeking out special interest groups, but I wanted to see how this could help him and whether my support would matter. Immediately DaGreek followed and fanned me! I was almost intimidated. I hadn't published a word, but I'm sure Merlin had mentioned me to him. I began timidly to publish a couple of tentative prose hubs. I was not going to share my poetry here! haha

Quickly a few well- placed notes to his own followers had my timid hubs being visited and my work being encouraged, probably in spite of its ponderous, pedantic tone! But before long I was writing away and including a poem now and then on my hubs. I wrote a hub commending how this system works, in fact. It was an early and my first hubs to get a nod from the HP top-brass. I'd begun on HP in March, 2010; this was written in May, 2011 when I had become fully aware of what this place offers, when one understands how it works and gives it one’s best efforts. It's not a 'free ride', one could say, but a mutual sharing opportunity to write and publish. I believe in the system. The personal rewards of meeting other gifted writers is enough to convince me! Where else, pray tell? http://hubpages.com/community/Following-Other-Hubb...

Sometimes one sees someone discouraged who one feels has 'potential’; and one wants to try to encourage them to keep on keeping' on, hoping the person will arise to it and fulfill his/her undeveloped potential. It's great when the person comes through.

But to see someone whose potential is bursting at the seams, but who is becoming ready to throw in the towel, well, that just couldn’t happen if I could do ANYTHING about it. If I could do anything in my limited power to encourage you, John, I just HAD to! It wasn't a kindness. It was more like a necessity!! I did what anyone here would have instantly done who had stumbled across your site and noticed the excellence of your talent!! I don't recall who-all I sent my little recommendation to, but it was folks I knew would respond and who would appreciate your work! I was very proud to recommend you! And, trust me, I don’t recommend just anyone who joins with a casual thought of trying writing. Sometimes they find their muses, but sometimes it may be kinder wait and let the truth speak for itself. This was one of those times, except you'd almost given up when the TRUTH was that you already could write - and very well! So. . . . I as there and I could do something. The rest as they say - is history!

NOW look at you! You have hundreds of eager followers and fans who can't wait to read your next hubs. You support others with talents. You're a presence on HP! You've won the top honor here for a POET on HP! THE best Poet of 2014! WOW! And poetry is not the mainstay of HP, so it’s all the greater honor to have garnered this fine recognition which is so totally well deserved. - You accomplished it all on your own. You took off like a housafire writing and circulating. All I had the honor to do was to give you just a wee push at a key moment in time when I just happened to be here because you'd reached out to visit my hub site! YOU took up the challenge, as you would, of course, when you felt the hope resurge! And off you went! I am so very proud of you!

I've followed your work like a panting puppy ever since, knowing it would always be worthwhile, beautiful, fun and fully able to stand on its own. If I’ve time to read only a few hubs that are newly published - if one is yours, I read it!

So thank you for giving me a lovely nudge up today. I've been out of my usual writing pace, due both to other pressing duties and a couple of bummers to my bod, so activity on here has seemed 'slow', at best. I could almost have wondered if I need to just retire! But this hub of yours, your Ode has certainly boosted my spirits and giveen me great humbling honor.

The many other gracious comments from my dear HP friends here are also so very pleasing, welcome, encouraging and gratifying. Thank you!! Nice to know I'm not forgot! (smiling from ear to ear here. I may have trouble focusing on wild game pix for the next several days or more! haha)

Thank you, hugs and love! ~ Nellieanna

Oh, John, this is a most beautiful Ode to our dearest and most gifted poet, who is the epitome of grace, Nellieanna! Her poetry is like no other in its beauty and her writing is a blessing to read. I have loved reading her poetry since I have been on HP and saw where you would always comment as a faithful follower of hers too. She has certainly had an interesting life and expresses her experiences of her life so beautifully in her poetry.

I am glad I came to read your wonderful poetry after Jackie had given you a "Hug of the Day" back during that time. There are so many gifted poets and writers here, and the key is to get involved in reading others' work so that they will come and read our own work.

Voted up ++++ tweeting, pinning, G+ and sharing

Thank you for such kind words and congratulations Sparklea. I believe we should all give credit to others who have helped us, and I for one appreciate all the help and support I get. In one of the forums recently I was told I was here at HP for the wrong reason. They said if it was for a love of writing and sharing with my peers rather than to appeal to Google and attract lots of traffic and money then I should take my writing elsewhere. The next day I found out I had won the "Best Poet" award so it put that comment in perspective.

Hi Nellianna, I am so pleased that you are happy with this hub. I was hoping it didn't embarrass you or anything, but I felt that after being chosen as "best Poet 2014" I thought it was the least I could do to acknowledge the role you played in getting me to this point. I'm still reeling from the incredibly kind and generous Ode from you, John, and sweet praise from so many of my dear HP friends. I'm eager to meet some who've responded whom I don't know yet; so have something to look forward to when my chores are behind me.

That was sweet of you to compare me with Audrey Hepburn. She was one of the main examples I used in my hub "The Essence of Elegance".

Coincidentally, I was likened to her look when we were both younger, especially her most natural look as in many of her early roles, such as in "Roman Holiday". We did share some similar features & an unmistakeable 'pixie' expression. By the way, at the time, she wasn't even considered a beauty compared to the reigning glamour stars. She was off-beat, skinny and generally just too 'different'. But ultimately it was her genuine selfless kindness and lasting classic elegance which distinguished her during her career and personal life. So I'm honored to be likened to her in any way. Thank you!

Jodah profile image

Jodah 2 years ago from Queensland Australia Author

Thank you Nellieanna for revisiting and giving that wonderful insight into Audrey Hepburn. Her beauty obviously came from within and transferred to everything she did. So you shared more than just looks, :)

Nellieanna profile image

Nellieanna 2 years ago from TEXAS

Aw, John, thank you, my dear. - It's my worthwhile aspiration, at least.

It was her humanitarian work with Unicef: - hands-on, no glamour, in the field; - just genuine caring, and, even after her death, her Children’s Fund which still provides help for needy youngsters, and much more evidence of a selfless spirit, which truly impressed me. I could never fully live up to her example, but she’s a genuine inspiration.

Her own early history before stardom is incredible in itself. Though her heritage was one of European aristocratic distinction, theirs was a tumultuous lifestyle in many respects. There was even a Nazi complication through support of that regime by her British father, who deserted the family when she was still a kid. She herself helped raise funds for the Dutch Resistance by her dancing (she was a ballerina since age 5). But she suffered malnutrition and health complications from a famine that swept The Netherlands during and following the war years. As a supporter of the Resistance, she was forced to hide when still just a child. As a mere child herself, she observed trainloads of other children who were Jewish being transported to the atrocious fates awaiting them, indelibly imprinting on her memory and her soul and surely inspiring her later humanitarian works with needy children.

She was fluent in half-dozen or more languages and was artistically multi-talented: - she was so much more than ‘just a pretty face’, a fashionista and outstanding performer. In fact, when she became a loving mother, she nearly thoroughly left her public life and acting to devote herself to being a full-time mom. A real inspiration and role model in so many ways!

Forgive me for going on and on. It’s something quite dear to my heart.

Very nice dedication to a wonderful poet and friend.

I still remember getting an email from Nellieanna asking if I would give you a look. She said you were a fine poet but that she thought you were discouraged. Thank you for your lovely comment Ann. I had to write this so others would know just how the support and encouragement of your peers can help a writer. What beautiful comments, - reflecting the mutual caring spirit among the Hubbers! It is one of the most genuinely supportive groups of people; - and being people with a mutual interest which, in some arenas might be more competitive than mutually encouraging, perhaps it's all the more inspiring. Nor is it a group of people with a common interest so exclusive in their esoteric interest as to exclude others. Not at Hubpages.

What help it can be when someone recognizes one's individual style, too! We're all different, and each has something unique to share. I definitely encourage us all to reach out and help newcomers or those who seem to be spinning their wheels to feel more welcome and to sort of 'show them the ropes'. It's well worth it! I'm aware that I could do it more often!

Well said Nellieanna, I second those words.

The theme shouts out to me "No man is an Island." We all need the support and knowledge we gain from each other.

I was introduced to you through 'hot hubbers' by our lovely Daisy Mariposa. Reading your poetry left my mouth watering for more. To know you is to love you John.

Your Ode to beautiful Nellieanna is just beautiful. I congratulate you again for your achievement and award.

I know you inspire others with your poetic paintings and the time will come when you, too, will set a gifted poet to sail into the dawn of a new day. Hugs - Audrey

Thank you Audrey. You are kind as always. Yes "No man is an island"..very good. I have commented and shared the work of new poets to Hub Pages who I thought showed promise, but can't ay I've actually taken anyone under my wing so to speak, as Nellieanna did with me. As you say, "the time will come". Hugs back.

You write such beautiful tributes to others, and I really envy how you can take someone and make them your muse. Another beautiful hub you've written.

Thank you for your kind comment DealForALiving. I wish I could tell you how to do it...but it's something that just happened. I guess we all have to just offer encouragement to other writers and see where it leads.

Hi Jodah congrats on your poetry and lovely ode to Neillieanna who is indeed a remarkable poet and has written many wonderful poems. I am happy that she has inspired you to keep moving on. We all learn as we progress and that's why there are folks like Nelli around to keep us on the right part.

Have a bless day and keep up the lovely work.

I'll be sharing this :)

Thanks to each person who has expressed kindness and caring, first for the phenomenal talent of our John and for my little contributions!

You know, I'm such a spontaneous, fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants person, it's amazing to hear so many fine comments about whatever influence my odd-ball ways and means may have triggered. I seldom set out to do that, unless, as in this case, someone like John is about to fall through the cracks who simply can't be allowed to do so! That gets me moving with purpose, if I'm privileged to know about it, which happened to have been the case awhile back. Any one of us would have done the same!

In truth, I can only say that each one of you whom I know and interact with on Hubpages has, by your presence, comments, & your own efforts, - inspired me and kept me believing in the effort to write and share and the power of writing and sharing with each other and anyone else our words may happen to touch. What else propels a writer, really? Oh, sure, we do like to express ourselves and to use & refine our own sense of language, of course. And if we happen to get any income from it, we like that. But, to be very frank, in order to pick up a pen or haul out the keyboard and begin letting words and thoughts flow forth uninhibited from one's soul: -- well - the reasons for that can only be: 1) to fulfill that soul and its need to be 'heard' (even if only to oneself, as it was for me for decades); and 2) to touch other souls in whatever manner happens, pretty much spontaneously. Period.

So of course, we who write here on HP are always in the process and position of affecting each other, who, also being writers, have the same kinds of instincts and desires to touch, encourage and even to help each other, whatever the things boiling up from inside in each of us. If it's about self-confidence in writing, or personal matters, if it's about discouragement in any realm, our words - when shared - can sometimes make the difference between a fellow-writer's courage to continue or a sense of hopelessness. That is pretty amazing! In fact, if anyone doubts that individuals are the sources for peace and love, maybe they need to ponder this microcosm of individuals a bit. ;-)

PS - for some who may not yet be acquainted with Lady Fiddler (who has commented here) - her work is so pleasant touching!

Thank you for gracing this hub once again Nellieanna. Your wonderful comments really add to the value of the hub as a whole. I hope everyone returns to read them as they will be glad they did. Yes from the other comments you can certainly see the impact you have had on others here at hub pages. It is the sense of community, encouragement and support that makes Hub Pages stand out apart from many other writers ' platforms. Take care.

Isn't it amazing what an encouraging word can do. I wouldn't be here either if it weren't for all of the encouragement from our fellow HubPages writers. I credit Billybuc (the incredibly talented Bill Holland) for not letting me give up.

Let's be that someone who nudges other back onto the path.

Jodah profile image

Jodah 2 years ago from Queensland Australia Author

Hi Availiasvision, I agree it is amazing what one kind word of encouragement can do. We are lucky that there are caring people here at HP like Billybuc and Nellieanna to reach out when needed. I agree, let us do the same for others. It is the least we can do.

It always amazes me how many dedications Nellieanna receives. Not to say that she doesn't deserve them! Your ode is lovely, too. In a way, I guess I owe yet another thanks to her because you are the one that first followed or commented to me, I believe. Glad you did! Even though I have not had as much time on HP lately as I would like.

Jodah profile image

Hi shanmarie, yes Nellieanna seems to have inspired and encouraged quite a lot of us here at. Hub Pages. Really? I never knew I was the first to comment and follow your hubs.. That's great. If she hadn't shared my hubs with her followers I probably wouldn't still be here. I hope you can start spending more time writing hubs here soon.

What a lovely ode to a lovely lady! It is so wonderful when we have someone to encourage us in our writing. I had (have) such a person, too.

As you know, I don't write much poetry, but I wanted to write an ode and found this among the other odes on HP. I've never written an ode before.

Voted this UP, etc.

Jodah profile image

Jodah 23 months ago from Queensland Australia Author

Thank you for your lovely comment Mary. I wish you the best with writing your ode and I look forward to reading it too. Not sure if odes have a very strict format just that it needs tobe a tribute to a person or thing.

I was researching "odes" to find out more about them. My ode will be to my house! It will probably become "unfeatured" in a short time; who wants to read a tribute to a house, I wonder..... Oh, well.

Jodah profile image

Jodah 23 months ago from Queensland Australia Author

I just read your ode to your house and loved it. It won't be unfeatured I'm sure. I also fall in love with my homes and hate to leave them..especially if forced to.

I'm happy to see this beautiful hub circulating again John. I am once again inspired as I read through this lovely tribute to Nelieanna for the second time. How I appreciate your poetry and the message each one brings to me.

Though this has been up quite a while, I only just found it. And I found it as inspirational as you found N's comment long ago. In the writing world sometimes a year seems like a decade and a decade seems like a month. Good writing pulls me from reality and takes me to a place where time does not tick. Your work chauffeurs me to that place and I am so glad that Nellieanna was able to spot a good solid Oak among a forest of Pines.

Jodah profile image

Jodah 16 months ago from Queensland Australia Author

Thanks for reading this hub Bill, it needed some new readers as it has suffered the indignity of no longer being featured due to not enough traffic. It does tell the story of how I came to still be writing here at Hub Pages, and I can't say enough how grateful I am to Nellieanna for her encouragement early on. You are right that time often flies by and good writing can transcend the years. I am humbled by your kind words.

Oh, well, this was just awesome! I related to a lot of what you said here.

I joined hubpages like a year ago after I actually tried my own private blog. I had minimal success there from mainly an international audience, but then it just seemed to die down completely. On top of that, Google adsense would never pick me up. I didn't write poetry then, just articles, and at times I struggled to bring interesting subject matter to talk about.

I joined here, but didn't start writing until just 3 or 4 months ago actually. It was confusing to me on how to lay out my work, and I'm still learning, if I'm honest.

I love your story and tribute poem to Nellieanna. However, I cannot believe she was your only fan and commenter for such a long period. I love your work!!!

You, Jodah, have been a great influence for me since I've been writing on hubpages. You've been a tremendous support here for me from the beginning, and I feel so lucky to have met and made such a great friend. Thank You. :)

Jodah profile image

Jodah 16 months ago from Queensland Australia Author

Your words are very humbling to me Missy, I already think of you as a good friend here. As Nellieanna helped and encouraged me, I felt it my duty to do the same for you. I saw your obvious writing talent but I could tell from your first hub I read that you were depressed and discouraged. I felt compelled to try and change that, and I am so glad I was able to. Now you are writing regularly here, great content at that, and you are getting more and more followers. I am proud of you. I am so glad you could relate to this.
