My Son- A Poem

The news that I was pregnant again shocked the whole family

They said I was too young to have another baby

But I knew there was a reason he was given to us

So I vowed to love him like a good mother does

When the doctors told me that something was wrong

And that he would have to be delivered before too long

My heart turned to steel and I would not let it break me

After all, I had to be there for my baby

When he entered this world everything happened so fast

They took him away with a mad dash

He needed to go with the other sick babies

Where parents were watching over hoping...maybe

I just wanted to go and be by his side

But they made me stay behind

You need your rest too they say

Plus he needs much medical attention on this day

Nine long hours later the doctor came in with the news

It was a long night for your son and I need to fore warn you

He has machines and wires all around his tiny frame

But he will know that you are there if you just say his name

The next forty-eight hours will tell us more

It is too soon to tell what's in store

A nurse will bring you to him now

I braced myself all the way down

I never once thought that I would be in this place

I didn't let any of fears show on my face

I was wheeled to his side

And it was then that I began to cry

So still and calm he lay

I just wished I could take it all away

The nurse came over and whispered softly

Go ahead and touch his small body

I placed my hand in the little hole

I touched his tiny hand and felt his soul

My son was a fighter so I had to be too

This much I knew was true

Day and night I stood by his side

Hopes for his homecoming going through my mind

Each day he grew stronger

And I knew that it wouldn't be much longer

At last that day came

Life as I knew it would never be the same

He's added so much joy and happiness to our lives

And to think that people thought it wasn't right.

Thank you bayoulady! One of the hardest parts of it all was to see all of the sick babies. I am glad that your son pulled through....and yes I think that they will always be our baby!

Thank you all for the kind comments about my poem. To think that the words just came to me one day when I sat down to write.

Forum is a good way to stumble across hubbers that otherwise would remain in the fog. I saw you forum ? about making it to a score of 99 . So in order for me to post a answer there i came here to see what kinda stuff you write. I dont read many info hubs . i like creative writing stuff. So i was stoked to see you have some poetry. While reading this poem of yours i got a lil goose bumpy. The subject matter is dear to my heart. And your personal account is touching .And the way you dealt with the situation shows that you are a courageous , strong and loving mother.Good job

Beautiful stuff, ChristinaScibona!

My fave lines:

"He's added so much joy and happiness to our lives

And to think that people thought it wasn't right"

Sometimes, only a mother knows what is RIGHT.

This is very good. And on a very tough subject. We're all handicapped in one way or another. Some of them are more obvious. With a mom like you, your son will be great and an inspiration to many. Bless you.

Hi Christina, your poem is beautiful and so very true. My son was born with complications too. A special child enriches our lives in so many ways and teaches us so much about ourselves. Best to you and your family.
