One Monkey

You say I never bought you pretty things

Like pearly necklaces and diamond rings

But if I didn’t then where’s all my dough?

Let me get my hat,

Cause one monkey don’t stop no show

You say that I will always be lonely

That I won’t find me another one and only

But you watch while I slip out slow,

Let me just get my coat,

Cause one monkey don’t stop no show

You claim that you are the pretty one

The kind of girl who knows what’s fun

But we’ll see whose boat you row

It’s time for me go,

Cause one monkey don’t stop no show

You long to be a princess, pampered with charm

Long to have your prince there on your arm

But you’ll be dating toads I know it’s so

I’ll catch you on the flip side,

Cause one monkey don’t stop no show

You say the party’s has long been over

So are our salad days in the clover

But that just shows what you know

I’m gone like the wild goose,

Cause one monkey don’t stop no show

You say you’ve found another true love

Put me out and gave me the shove

But soon that new lover too will go

I’ll be laughin’,

Cause one monkey don’t stop no show

You said I was a jackass not worth your attention

But I done found new stuff, or did I mention?

But not to worry, she’s nobody that you know

We’ll wave when we drive by

Cause one monkey damn sure don’t stop no show!

Wow Wayne, I am impressed. This is not my usual reading style, but I absolutely loved this one. The video was also great.

@Minnetonka Twin...No, I wish I could play the uke like that. That some dude I ran across on the YouTube while searching for a good rendition of the song, Nadine. I have always looked for a way to use it with one of my hubs but this one was the first in which it made any sense. Glad you liked the poem...just me and some nonsense having fun! WB

@Old Poolman...One of goofy times of the day that seemed to bring on inspiration. I had known of the video for some time but never had anything to match it up with until I was inspired to write this poem. Glad you enjoyed it! WB

Wayne, that monkey looks just like an old-time newspaper guy I used to know. He always wore his hat while typing, too. By George, on a closer look - that's him, that's him!

Intriguing poem.

@drbj...He said he knew you so I let him have the job. Guess he wasn't lying about that part! I love to bring intrigue! WB

Great poem--is it set to music? I hear the Traveling Wilburys & lots of harmonica riffs. :>)

@Ken R. Abell....There were a lot of choices including an old song by that name by Eric Burdon & The Animals out of the 60's. I guess I'll leave that one to the reader! Thanks, Ken. WB

@Loves To Read...Apparently that monkey got around and may have been hot on the dating circuit at one time. LOL! Thanks for the read and the good words. WB

Funny! That's tellin' her off!! And I'm not even going to look to see if there is an idiom about a monkey and a show. Ha! Just takin' your word for it!

Wayne Brown profile image

@Truckstop Sally...Yes indeed, this is an old idiom..."One Monkey Don't Stop No Show"...they even wrote songs around it! Not like that chicken teeth enamel! LOL! Thanks much. WB
