Ode To Janna
Written in 1989 for my amazing best friend who was Russian. She was shot dead in her prime (45yrs old), in Africa, in 1988.
I brushed your hair back
Of course you won’t have liked that
I put some slabs of ice on you
Of course you won’t have felt that
I took you to church before your resting place
Of course you won’t have approved
I got your coffin built and painted in pastel blue and white
Of course you won’t have minded
I put your lovely portrait out
I know you would’ve approved
I got you rose petals for your last trip
I know you’d have liked that
I gave you your last bath
I know you would have preferred that
I put some coins “for the way they said” in your palm
I know you wouldn’t care
I sent you off as best as I could
I am sure you were there
Adieu my love, my mentor, my sister, my confidante
There’s been none like you
