Burning the Midnight Oil .........

Often my serenity goes missing in the
invisible sea of darkness
At least until
I arise and look away to
to the horizon of black
No .......then focus on
what I can see
on what I can do ...........
The single streetlight by the corner
Or the moon dodging this way
and that ......passing
among the windblown
clouds

And over the years I have befriended
these things
these objects of the night
the coyote in the fields
the howling winds
the snows slanting through
streetlight glow
The raucous drum circle
of rain on the barn roof
Yes like old friends and a silent nod
of the head in passing
But

But what would we do
without those friends
Those that require no words
no stuffy dinners
or unwelcome visits
No annoyances whatsoever
just the darkness
the solitude
and new a hope
for the silent and
invisible living
before the false dawn
arises
And like that very dawn .......I awaken
with a new sense of knowing
where I stand
among my friends

Awesome and beautiful. I love the quiet hours after midnight and many a night I'm at the computer till 3 or 4 AM. Somehow I'm more mellow, relaxed and my mind is clearer during those hours. I love seeing the dark fade away to light.

You really captured how it is the simple things, the constant, everyday, little things that bring us the most peace. Well done!

Beautiful, father. Like always. You brought your readers to your time and space, and show us the night from your eyes. The worst thing about living in the big city is there are no such thing as peaceful midnight so you surely make me missing countryside.

Beautiful Freya , my daughter the writer! I have missed you ! You know I lived in the city once for about five years , I was glad to leave because I'm just a simple small town boy. There is nothing like the peace and serenity of the quiet nights ,no sounds , no lights , no traffic! But you as well know that . Peace my dear beautiful daughter!........:-} And that is a beautiful new picture of you!

ahorseback, This is a very nice introduction for me to your work. I for one can't afford for my serenity to go missing, so I guess I'll hang onto the friends of the night that you speak of. Thanks, I look forward to reading more.
