On Angel Breathe
he appeared so unexpectedly
a shadow in the night.
the candle in my window
a soft alluring sight.
tentative at first he knocked
upon my window pane,
when I did not then respond
he shyly knocked again.
no one came to visit
at this unlikely hour.
I hid behind my curtain
my gut instinct to cower.
gently he called out to me
beckoned me appear
he needed but a favor
if for a moment I would near.
it all seemed so innocuous,
his appearance at my sill...
so i peeked around the curtain
shyly peering through the grill.
at first i didn't see him there
shrouded in the dark.
then his soothing honeyed voice
made his silhouette less stark.
his coaxing was seductive
and my guard began to slip...
his face came into focus
caused my heart to faintly skip.
his words were so cajoling
as they chipped away my fear,
he was quite magnetic.
ever gently bid me near.
I slowly slid the curtain
back against the wall
until I saw his shadowed face
projecting down the hall.
"I promise not to hurt you.
I really mean no harm.
just open up your window, dear,"
He implored with sweetest charm.
The voice of reason left me.
with a trembling in my hand,
I tentatively reached out,
In a move i didn't plan.
The moment that my fingers
touched the lock upon the frame
I heard the faintest whisper
on angel breathe it came.
though unsure that I had heard it,
internally I knew
from that faintest whisper
a sense of danger in me grew.
the pounding of my heartbeat
now rushing in my ear
returned the voice of reason
and my head began to clear.
It was in that instant
headlights pulled into my drive.
The shadow in the window
vanished leaving me alive.
Whatever was I thinking?
awareness, then, did dawn
the whisper borne on angel breathe...
the only reason I live on.
