On Normandy's Shore ......

The Men Of D -day.
The Men Of D -day.

Pounding surf ....... haunt beyond belief
chilling sounds of thunder
And even now what would we see
if the sea let us look under

He came ashore in the sea storm
wading in the lightning flashes
Somewhere in the air overhead
and behind the looming crashes

Turning once in the breakers
he spied a hundred floating free
Free of everything they ever were
though not all they will ever be

How does a man leave this world
yet be remembered for all time
How does a man lose his thoughts
and yet keep the empty mind

I saw his soul slowly move back to
the surface free of any wieght
When ever he looked at the woman
that saved him from twisted hate

He befriended often.... older soldiers who
were there at flanders field before
And marveled at recurring wars
And the death toll that he wore

He chose to stay away from ocean
shores as long as he did live
Never to walk into the surf again
after all he had to give

The sacrifices live on for years after the fight. These words capture the pain and wounds. Just beautiful!

gr82bme, My father of course was there right to the end , to the end of his life. He "survived" the war but not the return to normal. We owe them so much ,Thank you,

Very poignant well written. IT brings back memories of those in my life who have walked into their final surf of life on earth and into a new life in eternity.

Thanks for sharing. Poetry evokes so many emotions in each reader...

Blessings, Susan
