On The Wings Of Eagles (an inspirational poem)

Source

The Australian Version, before Bette Midler's.

I sometimes look up and watch in amazement and wonder at an eagle soaring so high and effortlessly, rising in the air currents with barely a need to move it's wings.

The eagle is often thought of as the king of birds, being able to soar higher and for longer than any other. Because of this, it is seen as being closer to God and sometimes a symbol to represent the Lord himself.

I wish I could be that eagle, and see the world from high with its sharp eyes.

On The Wings Of Eagles

by John Hansen © 2014

Mighty, mighty eagle

Ruler of the sky,

Give me your powerful wings

So that I may fly.

Soar above the turmoil,

Fly above the strife.

Give me your eagle eyes

So I can look at life.

Whirl and dive within a storm,

Mocking nature's power.

Give me your fearlessness

So nothing makes me cower.

Soaring to a higher realm

No other bird can reach.

Give me your tranquility

So God's word I can teach.

Rise up on the breath of God,

Close to Heaven's door.

Teach me how to harness power

So I can stop all war.

Oh, what a magnificent poem! Yes, it would be so amazing to soar like an eagle. What a wonderful thought. God does promise that we can do so when we grow weary when we place our faith and trust in Him.

Up and more and sharing

God bless,

Faith Reaper

I am told that in human terms: They could read a newspaper from a mile away. They can dive at over 180 MPH. And I have seen them through binoculars go from a mile high pluck a trout out of a raging river.

These are not super animals, they are super duper. Sometimes I will watch them for hours.

You are a good man to fashion such respect.

Hey Eric, thanks for you wonderful comment about just amazing these creatures are. I respect most creatures on this Earth. I may not want to share my house with some, but I still respect that they are on this planet for a reason, and it isn't just random and accidental.

What a wonderfully inspired poem!

You know what I like about your poems the most?

The way they always rhyme. You have a talent not only for rhyming but for making sure the poem makes sense.

So many poets rhyme for the sake of rhyming and they lose the cadence and rhythm of the words. I find that a distraction when I'm reading the work of those poets. I know when I read your work that I will not stumble in any of the stanzas.

You make the poem work and you work the poem. And that makes you a very talented poet. Voted up, awesome, beautiful and interesting. Well done!

Wouldn't that be wonderful? Great sentiments here; we all have a responsibility to rise above our base instincts.

Beautiful poem for a beautiful bird! I love the quote on your last image... it's inspiring!

Have a nice day!

Thanks for your kind and inspiring words Mary. My ethos is why write poetry that people have to rack their brains to understand. I could add lots of fancy flowery words and make it an intellectual work, but my poetry usually has a message and I don't want to hide that. The rhyme comes naturally to me, I was brought up on Dr Seuss...lol. Thank you for the vote up as well.

Thanks for reading Bill. It sure would be great if we could rise above.

Awesome, Jodah -- incredibly awesome ! Native Americans also see Eagle as the bird who flies closer to God (Great Spirit). I love eagles and watch them soar with envy and admiration in my heart. Well done as always, Jodah.

Well Phyllis, I don't think I've ever received a double awesome before...lol. Much appreciated. Yes I too love eagles and used to have eagle in my screen name. I am in awe of those great birds.

Beautiful poem, John. Near my home there is an eagle nest, and my father has for years taken my daughter down near the river where they can spy on the eagle and sometimes the eaglets. Their nests are huge and they are mighty, impressive creatures. Beautiful and majestic to watch.

Eagles certainly are beautiful and majestic Flourish. How long has the eagle's nest been there? Do they continue to use the same one for years? Thanks for the kind comment.

Your poem reminds me of an old song by the Imperials. What a great lesson in your lines. Eagles fly above the earthly issues. So can we, in God's strength.

I have to echo Will and say EXCELLENT. It must be so amazing to look up and see an eagle. I don't thing I've ever seen one in reality. My son used to have a fascination with the bald eagle when he was growing up and I have plenty of sketches he did. You brought back some beautiful memories for me. Thank you.

Beautiful! You take us up there with the eagles. I'd love to see one in the wild; there are some in Scotland but I haven't seen any.

I'm lucky enough to have been to a local Hawk Sanctuary which has all sorts of spectacular birds of prey. I love them all and could watch them all day!

Great poetry, as always. Ann

Quite a pleasant read Jodah and thank you.

The eagle is a remarkable bird; though never seen one over the British Isles; mainly Kestrels and other such raptors appear in Scotland and Sparrowhawks in England.

All the Best,

R.Q.

Glad to bring back some pleasant memories about your sons fascination Jane. I see eagles quite often, usually near the road, but not bald eagles...mostly wedge-tails here. Thanks for your generous comments.

Yes Beth, the eagle plays a big part in American Indian folklore doesn't it? I think some of my inspiration for writing this came from reading some Indian sayings and quotes. Thanks for the vote up.

I would expect there to be quite a few eagles in the wild Scottish Highlands Ann, but I may be wrong. The hawk sanctuary would be interesting. Like most other creatures I'm sure they need protecting too. Glad I helped you to imagine flying like an eagle. Thanks for your lovely comment.

Jodah profile image

Thanks R.Q. We have quite a few different eagles and hawks here. I am surprised there are few actual eagles in the British Isles.
