The Coldest Fire / Defiance

The Coldest Fire

Led astray and betrayed,
as her heart was just beginning to mend
from the mistakes she never chose to make
when her smile was young, back then

Open-heart surgery performed
without anesthesia, she awoke
to the full effect of a scalpel
cutting deep through naive flesh

Who could have prepared her
for the reality of death within life,
or the heavy-chested feeling
she'd deal with till she died

This world has become an inferno
that burns with the coldest of flames,
which spread to every corner of
the unguarded soul, forcing change

Walls are constructed, reinforced with pain
and haunted memories we cannot forget,
but every time we dare lower them again,
we find ourselves drowning in regret

There is a light, there is a chance,
there is a way, there is a truth,
there is a birth, there is a death,

there is something greater,
something beyond this twisted mess

Defiance

You shall become as a ram

without horns, with crippled hooves

my heart's song shall resound

constantly, within you,

shattering your spirit

The tormenting of your dreams,

my voice shall ever be

You shall become a rose

without petals, only thorns,

famished for hydration,

banished from my sight,

consumed by your own darkness,

lonesome, distraught,

broken, and haunted

Into thee, I breathe my life,

bestow the Sun upon your mind,

but my light, you shall reject,

for your soul knows only death,

your vision, black,

your eyes, they lack,

the ability to see me

I shall speak my truth

and send it forth,

across all the lands around you

My dominion is whole,

I am complete, and everything,

but to you, shall always be

nothing,

but the enemy,

you fear me, snake,

with every aspect of your being

It is not within my nature

my creation, to despise,

unless it reeks your subtle stench,

or within your realm, resides

I was caught by the title at first, I really like this sort of twisted things =) And I was right, it actually enthralled me. I think the ending of the first poem even sped up the time for me. I really like your style, Ben, great job!

The first poem hit so close to home for me...especially waking up to have open heart surgery without anesthesia. I can also relate to cold flames...many don't realize how close ice and fire can be.

The second reminds me of God cursing the serpent.
