Our Children, Blessed

By Tony DeLorger © 2011

Echoes of children’s laughter fill my memories,

the days when youth and parenthood graced my life.

A child’s exuberance and thirst for living,

persuasive and enthralling.

How I loved to watch their young lives unfold,

their dreams and disappointments render them questioning,

the process of growth and learning fresh and new,

accepted without question.

How fine their minds, like sponges open and absorbent,

able to hold and process what we of old can barely fathom.

How breakable their hearts open and vulnerable,

unblemished and pure of intention.

How they suffered by their own hands, their own optimism,

and how I loved to soothe their brow, trying to instil calm,

and understanding the ebb and flow of life.

How they stood tall and found their feet.

Now they too are graced with children,

watching with a full heart, their lives unfold.

Knowing what lays ahead, the agonies and the ecstasy of being,

they will hold tightly their babes, empowering them with love.

Our children are such a blessing,

our lives a miracle.
