In the sewers beneath our feet

Rats running free

Searchers of the night

Survivors of the dawn

Pestilence runs amok

Dope dealers dot our streets

Rats running free

Addictions they do sell

High life in a bag

Pestilence runs amok

In the high corporate towers

Rats running free

Twisters of the truth

Greed’s face in the sun

Pestilence runs amok

In the high places of government

Rats running free

Rampant spending of our assets

Liberty in jeopardy

Pestilence runs amok

Across our borders, illegal immigrants

Rats running free

Living off the public dole

No American want-to-be

Pestilence runs amok

In our hearts, creeping terrorist

Rats running free

Threatening lives, killing citizens

Suppressing a way of life

Pestilence runs amok

In the streets, apathetic citizens

Rats running free

Voting only their ignorance

No regard for being free

Pestilence runs amok

In our future, glorious leaders

Rats running out of town

Raising our hearts, our Flag

Restoring our patriotism

Pestilence overcome

Great stuff. Really like the imagery--so disturbing, likely because it rings true. Thanks for getting "rats running free" stuck in my head. :>)

Glad to see there was a positive ending of hope. I was getting depressed. You didn't refer to the size of the rats running free but I think they are in our government. Good poem.

Good poem - I can't help noticing almost a juxtaposition with Yellow Hair. I really like how you structure your verses. It adds to the overall feeling and carries me right through to the end. We need a Pied Piper right now!

@Ken R Abell...good to hear from you Ken. Seems like you dropped out of sight for a bit. I noticed you came back with a good entry though. Thanks for feedback, I appreciate it.

@Suziecat7...kind of woke up with this on my mind this morning. I still have faith that we can fix it if we just will. Thanks for the feedback.

@SilverGenes...thank you. It probably sounds like "Yellow Hair" because I am such a shallow poet (LOL)

I appreciate your comments!

@ Tom Whitworth...right on Tom. Just think BPop will probably be back tomorrow and give us some inspiration!

Rats can never co-habit with democratic patriotic citizens they must be destroyed, vanquished and sent forever to the sewers to never return. Better still drown them all, they bring the plague of discontent amongst us all. Like Silvergenes offered, we need a Pied Piper. Is there one in the wings ready to surface and stop this insanity in the present government.

Wayne, shallow you are NOT! Your poems sound like drumbeats to me. They are compelling and driving. Awesome stuff!
