Paid In Full

My oldest daughter was in her kitchen one evening and her very anxious son brought her a piece of paper that he had written on.

She sat down to read the note and to her surprise this is what it was:

For cleaning up my room......................................................$5.00

For mowing the lawn..............................................................$1.00

For running to the store for you.............................................$ .50

Taking out the garbage.........................................................$1.00

For getting a good report card..............................................$5.00

For raking the leaves up.......................................................$2.00

Total owed:.........................................................................$ 14.50

Well my daughter is pretty fiestie herself and she wrote him this:

For the 9 months I carried you, and with morning sickness...No charge

For all the nights I stayed up when you were ill........................No charge

For all the tears you've caused me..........................................No charg

For all the worried nights, filled with dread..............................No charge

For all the toys, clothes, food and wiping your nose................No charge

When you add up all my Love................................................No charge

And when you add it all up, the full cost is.............................No charge

Well needless to say he gave her a big hug and said "I Love You Mom" took the paper and in big letters wrote "PAID IN FULL"

Not that we put a price on what we do for our children..it was just that he had and I was proud that she took it so nicely and also of her reply....G-Ma :o) hugs

(since writing this it has been brought to my attention this was actually written by Melba Montgomery 1974 and later made into a song by different western artist. so sorry about that..I was not aware of this. Thanks to Mr. Indexer and Betty Jo ) :o) G-Ma I had never heard it before !

Another wonderful gem from you G-Ma.

I don't have young children anymore, but I will share this with my daughter and her friends.

How wonderful that your daughter didn't freak out in frustration and anger, but turned a potentially confrontational situation into a lesson of love.

And I love reading your hubs!

It sounds like the pride you have in your daughter is more than justified! Feel free to send your grandson to my house, as his rates appear to be far more reasonable than those demanded by my own children! lol!

Oh Wow G-Ma isn't that inspiring! I remember one time a friend of mine and I went out to dinner and a movie. Her son called her over 10 times during that 3 hour evening out. I was freakin' out and very annoyed. She just sighed and kept answering the phone. ( He was 11 or 12) When we got back I said "Chris, is their some reason you needed your mom tonight?" He said "No, but she should have been here at home." I said "Well, it's good for moms to go out sometimes. She has a life too." He looked at me in total surprise and said "uh,huh, she's already had her life..."

The sad thing about it was that he was very serious. It was an eye-opener for me...

How great it is to see that your daughter's son was wise enough to put "paid in full on his bill." Kids!!

Your daughter handled that so wisely...unlike my friend who continued to let her son think she had no life, and only his mattered. What kind of adult will he be? hmmm

great hub...thanks!! Marisue

A quick check on Wikipedia shows that the song "No Charge" was first recorded by Melba Montgomery in 1974, but was later covered by many other singers, including Tammy Wynette. It was probably one of the mostly sickly sentimental offerings ever produced by the Country and Western crowd, and was much parodied in the UK, where that sort of thing tends to get a bad reception. We just don't do "cute"!

I can only imagine that both grandson and daughter know the song very well, becuase the quotes are very close to the original, although I am only remembering it from my youth, when the horror it struck in me was clearly of such magnitude that I remember it to this day!

By the way, I love the Google ads that this hub has attracted!

Mr. Indexer spotted this.

I have to agree with him. It is a Lot like a song written before. Not even letting your grandson know, which I'm sure he wouldn't understand, you might need to look into it and give someone else credit.

I had the same thought. It's kind of like quoting someone's well-known poem or other writings. It has their thoughts. could be accidental plagiarism. Betty Jo
