PAPER POPPIES

Giving out paper poppies~

For Memorial Day no more~

This Veteran of past wars~

Shuffles and muddles his walker thru~

The door.

Not too old to remember though~

The days he served so well~

He still reflects on his long lost comrades~

He performed with~

That kept our lands from hell.

Will you remember Him~

Now he is old~

An electric recliner for his chair~

Could you take some time to hear~

His thoughts on serving over there.

He can’t remember what happened today~

The dementia has taken that away~

But recollecting his infantry~

Is clear in his mind~

From past yesterdays.

His duty he did perform~

With proud-ness and high reverence~

This soldier of the bygone years~

Now alone~

With not many left to share.

For our history and freedom he fought~

Years later on Memorial Day~

He gave out paper poppies for all to remember~

And our children to be taught for their stay.

Now he sits there aimlessly~

As time goes slowly by~

Will you remember his dedication~

And take the time to hear his~

Reflection of his ply.

Not well enough these days~

To hand out paper poppies on Memorial Day~

But please remember~

He was one who for our freedom~

A price was paid.

It is sad and should be criminal how we treat our wounded warriors here in America. I always bought a poppy our twon. I haven't seen any here in our town n a while. Thanks for a compassionate reminder.

Hyphenbird Thank You for stopping by..and your compassion, yeah alot of them aren't out there any more to do the poppie thing becuase they have gotten too old or passed on..They need new volunteers....It is sad...My dad is one that always did it but he is lucky to make it back and forth in the house now.

Hi Lisa.... Thank you for sharing this with us your many readers. We do need to never forget those who sacrificed for us to be live free as we do. It saddens me to think our Governments have forgotten. Our vets deserve more.

My Dad served in Europe during the war, his faith carried him through the hard stuff he had to witness and returned him home safely. I watched him continue to serve people over the years once back home. He was an amazing mentor to many. Like your dad, mine passed away in 2005 and not a day goes by I do not think of him.

Special hugs and much love from Canada

I'll remember your Dad along with my relatives that died fighting in 300 years of wars, Lisa Luv, by reading this poem every year. Yesterday and today, I've been remembering a great uncle I never met - Frank died in the US Army in WWII in Europe and I never knew his last name.
