Phrases we know, from years of being told.

You know you say it too...

I am sure that everyone has a hundred and one little saying or phrases they have heard that are repeated from generation to generations. My mother and the words which she had spoken to me throughout my childhood, some of which are things I swore I would never say to my children, are in fact what I tend to repeat to them today. The below hub, is an arrangement of these phrases- I am sure that most will be able to pick out more than one which you have heard or been told, regardless of your age. Hope you enjoy…the arrangement is mine---but the phrases have been around for awhile…

When you grow up-You will say the same things...

When did I become my mother?

Pretty as a picture.
Sweet as can be.
God Bless her little soul.
The girl is lost from reality.

Bow your head to say a prayer.
Look me in the eyes.
Do you know what I mean?
Stop telling me your lies.

Dinner is ready,
Now Go Brush your teeth,
A splitting headache.
No more for me.

Give me a break!
Lend me a dollar?
Call your Mom-
Ask your father.

I don’t like that.
May I have some more please?
I don’t feel good.
Okay-Now say cheese!

Ignore them, they will stop.
Nerds, Geeks, Preps and Jocks.

Ugly as a dog.
You live like a slob.

Clean up your room.
You will be grounded for life.
Keep your hands to yourself.
It’s bed time!

Rise and Shine.
Nighty, Night.
Lock the front door.
Turn on the night light.

Get ready,
I’m running late,
Don’t forget to remember.
Close the gate.

Because I said so,
I don’t care what you want.
Be nice to your sister.
Feed the dogs.

Don’t give up.
I’m losing my mind.
Be true to yourself.
Smile!
Do not lie!

She’s a nut job.
Keep me in mind.
It is a doggy dog world.
Don’t leave me behind.

Just you wait,
Until your father gets home.
You can make the rules,
Once you are grown.

If you don’t knock it off,
I will turn this car around.
Can you please stop?
Not another sound!

Look what we have here!
What did you say?
The world isn’t ending
The sun will shine again some day.

Take small bites,
Chew your food.
Elbows off the table-
Don’t be rude.

Great-I did it again
Where the heck are my car keys?
I need a vacation-
But it must wait till they turn 18.

So many sayings
Some I swore to never say
But Like mother, like daughter-
And I am now wondering,
When I got this way.

That is a good collection of lines. It is a sad day when you realize you are using your parents lines. I used because I said so yesterday, I'm not proud but it worked.

And don't squeeze the toothpaste in the middle!

When I was a kid I vowed that I would always squeeze the toothpaste tube any way I wanted - and now I find that I do it just like my mother so that I can squeeze out every last drop.

Loved this hub and voted it up.

This was terrific! I confess that as I grew older, some expressions came with me. (My father had some German ones that were never translated, but that is a different story.) I enjoyed this very much.

Hope you have a great Thanksgiving holiday.

This is a very clever poem, Holly!! I love the way you made the sayings work for you.

Take good care now!

Nan 6 years ago

It's easier to memorize the sayings that we feel comfortable with. It works. Your kids are darling.

Great selection of lines. I can remember them being used on me by my parents. I used them on my girls, now they are using them on their children.

You children are too cute for words.

Everytime I look in the mirror I see my Father and each time I give my 35 year old daughter some piece of advice I hear my Mother. I told myself a million times, I'll never be that way". Well apparently I lied. Brilliant poetry. Thanks.

Terrific Holly, I like the one where the mom says

"Stop doing that! Didn't I tell you to stop doing that? Do I have to come over there? What did I just say? Do I have to tell you again? I'm not going to tell you again! Stop doing that!" =:)
