Tribute Poem to my Father

Dear daddy how I miss you so

I think of you daily as you probably know

You were my beacon on a long cold night

when life gets hard your no longer in sight

Life was so full when your presence was here

Memories of you make me feel you are near

Our relationship was deeper than most daughter/dad

I am grateful for the love and connection we had

Pain grew into healing when you put down the drink

it was like all suffering just ran down the sink

I had dreamed of the day you'd see all the pain

that the bottle put between us, it wasn't in vain

My dream came to fruition when you asked God to help you

Your five hopeful kids knew it was possible to do

I'll never forget when you dropped to your knees

"I'm sorry children, forgive me I ask, "please."

The last years with you brought us close as can be

I can't wait when in heaven, I see you and you me

Thanks a lot Dave for your kind words. Today was bittersweet for me. I have great memories of my father but the part of missing him is hard every day. A part of me died when he left but I try to fill the void with the love of the rest of my family. I am really glad to hear that your getting back to hubpages and that I found you as I hubbed the other night. Sometime you just know when you have met a great person that your meant to meet. I look forward to checking out more of your hubs. Thanks Dave for reading my ode to dad.

Very moving. I didn't have a dad who struggled with alcoholism, but I had a dad who left this earth too early. I was 18 years old when he died and I loved him more than words can say.

Thank you for sharing your heart. Whether it is alcohol or some other culprit, many of us have struggled and conquered our relationship with our fathers; your words speak for many, beautifully so.

I salute your father. If he was a bomber in the war Lord only knows what he saw and did. War does strange things to folks, I know. That bottle was his shield and he did the best he could. Bless him, Peace!! Tom

What a wonderful heart felt tribute to your Dad. I didn't see much of mine after 10 years old and what memories I have of him were not so pleasant but I still love him.

When I read of someone like you who's Dad meant so much to, it brings a tear to my eye. Thank you for sharing this with us all, Dad's and Mom's are missed and the time we had with them we want to be precious. Peace and hugs.

This was beautiful, and while I can't apply it to my dad, I can to my mom. Saddlerider and I have some things very much in common. Our father's weren't any Andy Griffiths, but we still have a love for them that never died.

Hugs and appreciation for your sharing this feeling and tribute you have for your Dad. Mine was most precious to me as well - & of course - I've published a tribute to him.

I adored both my parents - each gave so much of themselves and each was courageous and so valuable.

As a woman, I feel a special admiration for and awe toward a good man. Men seem born to have such great challenges to face and are always expected to conquer them with such self-control and stoic courage, to never flaunt or boast about it and to endure endlessly. The undercurrents to this brave performance may have swirling whirlpools and impossible odds and a breaking heart, yet they must persist.

So when I read of others' wonderful Dads, brothers, husbands, friends - I appreciate it deeply. As for those dads who don't quite make the honor roll, I feel they may have faltered and then been taken down, but it is somewhat part of the setup. Guys have a rigid timetable for success and it is extremely difficult to recover from back-sets, once they are grown and on their life's paths. They should be given some slack. Good to hear that sons, especially, can forgive their dads' errors and love them still.

Dear RevLady-Thanks for stopping by and reading my tribute to my father. He meant so much to me and it use to hurt me so much when he drank. I felt somehow his drinking was my fault and it meant he didn't love me. Once in recovery he expressed how much he loved us and that the drinking had nothing to do with us. As an adult I see that alcoholism is a disease and not something they choose. Thanks so much for your lovely words to me. Blessings:)

Breakfastpop-18 is so very young to lose a parent. I am so glad your memories of your dad are so warm. I lost my mother at nine years old and that made dad and I even closer and that much harder when he passed away. I do know he is in heaven with mom and they are glad to be together again. Thanks for visiting me on a day when I needed it. It helps so much to talk about him. :)

Hi DavePrice and thanks so much for your caring words to me. Yes, all of us probably have one struggle or another with our parents but it is all worth it in the end just to know they love us. Dad's are so important for girls as they grow into young woman and I take many lessons from my dad.

Hello justom-You are so right about the bottle being dad's shield. My dad was a very sensitive man with a big heart and I can't imagine how hard it was for him to see the things he saw. I feel for all of the men and women who serve to keep us safe and free as it has to change them with all the trauma. Bless you justom for seeing my dad as more than just his struggles. Peace:)

saddlerider-So sorry you didn't get that dad and son relationship that you so deserved. I bet you and your mother were very connected because of this. Even in these difficult situations that come to us in this life, there happen for a reason. It may take a while to figure out but good can always come from pain. Bless you for coming to visit and giving me support. :)

Hi there ManWithNoPants-I am grateful you got what you needed from your mother. Isn't it funny though, it seems no matter what a parent lacks we still love them just the same. I remember my aunt(she was a sister in the convent)asking me how I could love my dad so much when he did the things he did. I could not believe she didn't get how a parent is so important and loved no matter what they are going through. We are all human and all have some kind of struggle. I was young but it didn't stop me from telling her how off base she was. Our parents are a gift from God and they do the best they can.

Hi KK and thanks so much for stopping by to read my tribute to dad. I'm in the mental health field and you are right on the money when you say that if a parent has an addiction, the whole family suffers with it. Dad went through treatment three times. The last time he finally did it for himself and not because he was forced to do it. By that time, he had lost much, including relationships with his kids and grandkids. Great to see you here.

Hi Nellieanna and thank you for reading my tribute. I want to read your tribute to your dad when I'm done commenting to all of you lovely hubber friends. I do agree with you Nellieanna that there is a lot of expectation on men in this society. How hard it must be to have all the pressures as most men don't feel they can admit their scared or worried. I hope that more men today see that it is ok and even manly to be open about concerns and fears. I do see some changes today in how married couples share more in parenting, work and emotional needs. Here is to all the hard working and loving men and fathers in this world. Thanks N. for coming by:)

I lost my mother to alcoholism several years ago. It is a tough, tough thing to lose a parent. I am 58 years old and still grieve at times for the loss. I don't believe we ever get over it but we learn to cope more as time goes by. It is a lot easier if we know we will meet them again in heaven though. Thank you so much for this beautiful poem.

Dear Pam~thanks for not only your kind words and comment but for sharing your story too. I lost mom at age 9 to alcoholism and dad was left to raise five kids. He finally put down the drink for good in his 60's which gave us plenty of healing time. I agree with you that we never get over the loss, no matter what age we are. I think of them daily and have had some visits from them too which is helpful for the grief. Blessings to you.
