Poetry, Becoming a Boy Scout, a Gay Boy's dream

Timmy stood tall and proud with extended hand

I wrote this piece in response to Governor Rick Perry, ( Texas ) refusing a gay boy's admission to The Boy Scouts Of America.

Little Timmy was so excited, he'd finally reached the ripe old age of ten

He'd dreamed of joining The Boy Scouts Of America with his friends

And especially his hero, his big brother Ben

Ben's walls were lined with awards, merit badges, emblems, banners..oh so proud

Timmy's heart was heavy

Ben gently explained he might not be allowed

You see Timmy was a gay boy who never struggled with his identity

He was loved and cherished

Brought up in a home with peaceful serenity

Ben took him to meet his scout master

Hoping against all odds

To avoid a heartbreaking disaster

Timmy stood tall and proud with his extended hand

Instead of a welcome handshake the scout master looked away, ignoring Ben's gift to Timmy

His first merit arm band

Timmy knew in his heart he would make The Boy Scout organization his number one priority if given a chance

He was also aware that living in the state of Texas

He would be judged at first glance

The scout master would never know his heart, his love for America, his commitment to advance pride in who you are, extending a hand to others who were born different and perchance make America and the world aware of the person inside

Such a young boy full of gay pride

Dreaming of a time when all will walk together side by side

When no child would ever be cast aside.

This heartfelt poetry of yours, Ruby,

Makes me want to say,

Would he refuse assistance

From a doctor who was gay?

I found your work interesting and it is always sad to hear about discrimination, especially when it is directed towards a child. Another level of bullying.

Everybody is beautiful in their own way...

Oh Ruby, I wish I could hug you and this boy. He will always have the heart and pride of a boy scout, much more than the scout "master"... bless you for this honorable tribute.

Love, Maria

Hi Ruby. Your beautiful heart shines with an illumined empathy. I was a boy scout and loved everything about it. I earned my Life Scout and was only three merit badges away from Eagle Scout. A boy scout is many things including ... trustworthy, brave, clean and reverent. All boys should be socialized in the way I enjoyed. Thanks for caring.

I am glad that there is no such discrimination in boy scouts. Just recently it was in the news that it is okay to have them in the scouts...phew!

This incident is new to me, but I am glad that things have changed for the better.

Ruby, this poem really touches me. I was so angered when I heard about that young Eagle Scout who was turned away. And months (?) later there came the story of how the Boy Scouts of America had to look at their policies of refusing to allow gays to join.

I'm grateful this may be changing, however, when I think of how many scout masters sexually abused young scouts and nothing was really brought out into the community about it, it makes me sick.

Your poem is a acknowledgement of the ugliness that is in some people's hearts. Thanks for sharing. Rated UP/A and will share.

Hello Denise, You bring out a great point. The sexual abuse perpetrated by the scout masters against the children was quickly hushed up, how they can come out now and forbid a gay child's entrance is mind boggling. Thank you for your input.....

I remember this young man. When the story broke in the paper, I showed it to my son, who was a boy scout himself at the time. I asked him what he thought of the matter, and if he agreed with it. His face contorted, said that he cant be part of an organization that has no honor. He told me how this organization was supposed to be about brotherhood, integrity and values. But if they cant bring themselves to welcome a gay scout, then he cant stand behind their insignia no more. Even if an isolated incident. Today he holds those values the same, but also knows that discrimination is the ugly child of hate.

He joined the scouts through our church. And apparently this is more common that I thought. We had no idea. I am very proud of my son. Children are so impressionable, and this pattern is teaching boys to discriminate. When his scout master asked him why he was leaving the troop, my son told him that some day he will have children and if he happens to have a gay son, he wanted to be able to look him in the eye.

I believe that our sexual orientation is not a choice, but rather a simple matter of biology. Though I am not a scientist, research has made a correlation based on hormonal influence on the fetus while in utero, be it predominantly estrogen or testosterone.

If there are any stones to be thrown, the Boy Scout Secret Perversion Files alleging child sex abuse perpetrated by adult leadership within the organization, is where concern should be directed. The hypocrisy and judgmental, misinformed mindset of The Boy Scout organization, like the secrecy seen in the Catholic Church sex abuse cover-up, would make it off limits if I had a son.

Thank you, Ruby, for a heartbreaking piece that tells us that ignorance, inequality and prejudice still exists today, hiding in places where we'd least expect to find it...breaking the heart of an innocent little child.

Rosemay50 profile image

Ruby it baffles me how these organisations can be so hypocritical. To turn away an innocent 10 year old when scoutmasters are abusing children just makes me so angry.

Hello Amy, It is a proven fact that a child, girl or boy is born with a predestined sexual orientation, whether that being the lack of or the abundance of sexual hormones is not clear. I tend to believe that is the factor. What i hate the most is people hiding behind the pulpit, such as the priests and preachers who are pedophiles and preach hate toward the Gay community. The story of this little boy broke my heart. God bless him and his wonderful family. Thank you for coming..Your input is valuable. Lots of hugs...

This is a beautiful poem. I have to admit, I am torn on the subject. It's sad to me that a child be barred from any activity he might want to partake. I have no hang ups about gender orientation myself. At the same time, I believe in religious freedom, and the scouts are a religious organization. I believe that even if I disagree with their stance on homosexuality, they have a right to decide what beliefs and values they want to promote and which they want to exclude in their own private organization, just like Native American tribes have a right to not admit non-Natives to their rites. I sympathize with people who feel excluded from certain religious activities and organizations, but at the same time I am such a strong supporter of religious freedom, whether I agree with the religion or not. I always have a really hard time promoting one group's freedom at the expense of another's and find it hard to take sides. I do love the passion and beauty in this poem, though, and hope those children will find activities in which they will be welcome and accepted.

Hello WiccanSage, I really never thought the Boy Scout organization was a religious group. They have certain values, but all religions are members. I in no way find it difficult in taking sides when it comes to special interest groups hurting a child. I believe in equality for all. Thank you for commenting..Peace..

Hi always exploring; I totally want to make it clear, I think any non-acceptance of GBLT is completely misguided and I long to see tolerance and equality prevail. But the fact is, the Boy Scouts, since their inception, have been and remain to be today, a Christian organization, and the Supreme Court has held up the rights of such organizations to determine criteria for membership. I don't deny them their rights to have an anti-GLBT stance, but I do support stripping them of all public funding myself because they shouldn't be able to have both.

I believe we are all connected in this life and you never know when you or someone you love will need a hand. It might even be a boy scout who saves your mother or father from drowning while at a family gathering. Would you ask that young man if he was gay after he saved one of your parents? I doubt it. What about the Marine who lays down his life to save your son or daughter on the battle field. When you meet this brave soldiers family will it even cross your mind to find out if he was gay or not? I would hope not! As fellow human beings we need one another and should treat one another with respect. Voted Up and Beautiful

Rick Perry is a bigger ass than I thought he was, even after that abortive run for President. The sad thing is that this abominable act probably made him more popular than ever in that very red (neck) state, where I was born and, thank whatver gods may exist, have been long gone from.

How would a child of ten know they are gay? Does an adult help them figure it out? If he is having sex (or dreaming of sex with other little boys) at ten years old then maybe there is a bigger problem here than getting in the scouts with straights.
