Police And Thieves

Source

Police and thieves sit around the table

Eyeing each other with the jaundiced eyes

Practiced in the ways they respect but dislike each other

Each one daring the other to make the first move

I don't believe in police says the first thief

If they exist it's only to scare us basic folk

With talk of the prisons and life without parole

But I don't believe they really exist

Never seen a policeman or woman

Never seen an arrest

Read the lawbooks and even those who claim to believe in police

Don't do what it says

Then the thief roles another cigarette

Checks out the woman at the bar

And fingers the wallet he lifted on the way into the bar

Whose business is it anyway?

You're all idiots responds the first policeman

What's been made clear to you is something

You're just too stupid to see

You don't want to see it, you want to just go on living

Like there are no consequences

You just don't care about anyone but yourselves

There you go trying to scare us again rejoined the first thief

But we don't believe in your judge, and the law is only so

You don't have to think for yourselves

You should be scared replied the first policeman

The judge is judging everybody, you and me both

And the rest of your life is a very long time

To never get to see the sun

Argument broke out

Glasses were thrown

A shot rang out

It was a dark and stormy night

The ill wind blew nobody good

And then they all went to their homes

For a hot meal and a bath

While the storm clouds gathered on the horizon

This reads like a Friday night in Ennytown. I like the picture of the 'Bobbies' (aka 'Plod/Rozzers/Fuzz/Peelers' - after Robert Peel). Two out of three being in no fit state for the job, it's an accurate image of many of our police forces. In some areas they have to be fit, because the criminals they're fighting are fitter. Always one step behind, often they don't pursue an investigation because they see the cases as 'wasted time' and begrudge Joe Public the time of writing reports. They're happy to sound soothing over the phone if you call them about a vehicle theft or break-in, and whoever is sent to look for 'dabs' will tell you there's not enough to go on.

They're quick off the mark when they're chasing promotion, though, and don't say anything they could construe as 'lip, or they'll be happy to show you the inside of one of their 'paddy wagons' on your way to cool off in a holding cell.

Wow! You'd never get that from MI5 (the show!) Or Life on Mars.

Thanks for the comment!

Did you have the full series (3) of 'Life on Mars' over there? I thought that was a real tongue-in-cheek look at Plod's upper echelons. No, they're very close about that sort in thing in the 'Corridors of Power', (and at the BBC since 'Savile-gate')!

Yes, we get to follow Savile-gate (LOL!) over here as well, not to mention now we can follow 'Entwhistle-gate!'

You can get the entire show (were there 2 series or 3?) on this side of the pond but it's not as easy as you might think. In spite of the American show that was inspired by the original, it remains what could be called a "cult" show here and I can't check it out of the library or rent it at the video store (actually we have no more stores, from the video box!) Nor do I have the money to just up and buy it. Pity!
