Prose - United? How So?
That’s what it says
But how do you feel?
That’s what we believe
But what does life reveal?
A black man
Bitter from the past
Trying so hard to forget
The affronts that have amassed
A white man
Racked with guilt
Trying so hard to forget
The racial legacy he built
A brown man
Trying to assimilate
Straddling a border
Both sides filled with hate
A rich man
With only one goal
To conquer the world
The price we pay taking its toll
A veteran
Remembering the pain
One who carries a flag
The other carries shame
The faithful
Shouting God’s praise
Confusing others
Of secular ways
A gay man
Wanting his rights
Opposed by fear
Of sins last rites
The diaspora
On our very soil
Pointing fingers
Making blood boil
United?
How so?
A commune
Of common woe
Must a plane crash
And a man fall
For us to remember
Our common call?
Fear and anger
Brought us together
Fear and anger
Won't let us stay together
Must shock set in
For us to see?
Each of us are human
It’s all we can be
Remove the wall
From your mind
Remove the thoughts
That are so unkind
Close your eyes
To their skin
Listen to their voice
Hear what is within
It is the same as you
As it is with them
They love their children
So let us begin
Take their hand
And they yours
Remember who we are
People from distant shores
What makes us strong
Is our experience
Come together
It’s time for deliverance
From hate
And slavery
Instead deliver love
And equality
Only in your heart
Can you unite with another
Open your mind
See your new brother
We are united
If only you will
The differences among us
Make us stronger still
United?
How so?
You tell me
I want to know
