Pulling Me into Night..........

I like to paddle the canoe along a shores edge
and be as silent as the water
Slip the paddle into the wetness
as if trying to caress
movement inself
And then to empty my mind of all things
thoughtlike ....all that remains
is the emptiness of sound
of water ....of serenity
More than once to spot the red eyes
of the ringneck loon
guarding her nesting
And the male in the distance calling
to me ......tempting me
away ........
She remains absolutely motionless
except her mind......perhaps
I will not see her there
But I will not go near ......don't
fret about your young ...I too
will protect you.......my love
And then onward to the edges of the cedars
the old trunks that lie
tangling in the shallows
The mists lifting from the still surface
of the lake....untill the the mysterious abyss
of life itself slides secretly
into darkness......
And all that remains are the holes
in the floor of heaven......
The stars......
And the moon guides me
back.....home

I feel like I have been on a gentle journey into the meditation of moonlight on the lake. This is a gorgeous piece of writing horseback.

GORGEOUS! - the imagery and remembrance it conjures of how it feels to ride in a canoe, so silent and such a part of the natural rhythm of the stream and its life. um hum!

hahaha - actually it was my job to make sure our two young children didn't stand up and unbalance the canoe! Later in life - another life, almost, it was on a small "Sunfish" sailboat and I was in charge of the cooler and making sure everyone had a cold one. We went belly up in WhiteRock Lake on many a Sunday afternoon! That was the fun part!

I live not far from there now. In my college days, WhiteRock Lake was renown for being where students went to "watch the submarine races" - and smooch. One summer when motorboats were still permitted on it, I tried to learn to water ski. I'm just not built for it, I guess. Something about my center of gravity. But I tried all that summer, as well as many others on several lakes over the years and drank a lot of lake water in the process. Finally I did get up on those things for about 5 minutes, so I retired. I was in my late 40s and had accomplished a seemingly impossible feat! haha. :-)

I have enjoyed many a quiet ride early in the morning or in the early evening in a bass boat in the back seat, sometimes casting, but mostly drawing and writing and observing nature while my George fished. I loved the sound of his lure hitting the smooth surface and then the plop-plop-plop of it as he worked it along the surface before reeling it in and casting again. He always caught and released. Precious memories.
