Race To Which Mountain

Sharing you this one funny true story about a friend's first mountain hiking.

This is a story I once heard
About a group of people who were all unheard
They were invited for a climb
On a mountain far behind.

It’s just a one-hour walk, their friend had said
My grandma used to go there on its peak
So the group was very pleased
They would climb the mountain with ease.

So one beautiful morning their journey had begun
Along the way, they had so much fun
But not after when they felt the hot blow from the sun
Too tired to go on, they rested and ate some ham.

Then suddenly one man just noticed the time
They’ve been walking for almost 2 hours on the line
And not still on the halfway of the climb
They started to doubt the word that doesn’t rhyme.

You said your grandma climb this mountain till its peak
And she just needs an hour to reach
What is she, a witch?
Can we just get a broom to pitch?

Their friend started to argue
She said it was just an hour to reach the top view
But how will I ever know?
I never really experienced it too!

On the middle of their discussion
A habal-habal passed by without hesitation
Everybody was speechless and were all hooked
Their eyes were all kept on the habal-habal's outlook.

They burst out laughing until tears were on their eyes
The one-hour time is for a habal-habal ride
So no need for a broom to rise
Well, in the end, they've reach the peak and got their price.

Different types of Habal-Habal

A Habal-Habal (or Skylab, in other word) is a motorcycle that has been modified with a seat extension so as the driver can carry more than three person (most probably 4 to 6 passengers) at a time.

This type of transportation is popular on provinces, especially on mountains where no jeepneys or any bus can enter due to steep slopes and narrow trails and lanes.

Have you seen or ridden a Habal-habal before?

An enjoyable journey, I love the chatter of the people, their bickering and how they laughed when they saw that they were duped!!! The habel-habel is the way to go, I have not seen motorcycles modified like this. I love your story and your photography also, especially of the valley through the branches of the tree and the family of seven on a motorcycle. Thank you for sharing, Unknown Spy, my votes and best wishes to you.

Lol. Habal-habal is really fun and enjoyable to ride on. But it's scary if the slope of the terrain is steep and the road is rocky. People from other country might not understand what a habal-habal is. If they just look at the picture, then they can see what you have mentioned.

I can't help but appreciate this funny poem. I shared it in my Facebook. By, the way the transport depicted in picture at the bottom in which people are on seats attached to the sides of motorcycle is also called "sky lab". He he. People who rode on it coined that word. I was then in the hinterlands of Davao. That was a long time ago.

Thank you for taking me on a great ride M, your story was brilliant and fun to read. I haven't heard of this method of transport, very interesting hub. Voted up, awesome, useful, beautiful, and interesting. Engaging work as always :)

heheh thank you sir noel. yep, skylab (at first i wonder why, is it because the main purpose of this transpo is for mountain reaching the skies?..i thought skylab is only the term for cable cars..Now i know, skylab came from the word "sakay na lab" meaning "get on, love."

James, I'm so glad you enjoyed the habal-habal ride too. Some people here cannot afford to buy a side car for their motorcycle..so as to maximize the use, they just put extensions so that more people can get in.
