...Red Light Runner...

The streetlights give us pause

our brains are scrambled, baked, fried

we wait for the legendary

Red Light Runner

Even though the light has been red

for some time now

The Runner still barrels through

Caution is no longer yellow

its black

Feigned Hesitation

the primal urge to go

blinding white

I couldn't see

the Sun was IN MY EYES

The scalding light

made me do it

The Red Light Runner

just wants to illegally slip past

just milliseconds spiral off

into eternity

they change lives so quickly

as the body gets dragged through the intersection

shock, anger, pain, disbelief, terrifying last moments

spent staring at the undercarriage

The careless disregard for the rules

The Red Light Runner denies the crime

How will the truth be revealed

from way down there

the ghost rises up

forever stuck

at the Intersection

of life and death

Amazing piece. Both the literal and metaphoric, leaves one with an impending sense of doom. Definitely voted up and awesome.

that IS terrifying! It's just the split fraction of that moment when you are engulfed in helplessness and pain, that realization of loss of control and how we are "righted" somehow after such a traumatic experience...thankfully you were (are) okay! Wonderful that dad got rid of that car :)

Carole - once as a child I was riding in the backseat of a car that had no seat belts and a damaged back door. As my father rounded a corner, the door flew open and I fell out...skidded across the street and nearly into a storm drain...talk about a terrifying moment! My entire abdomen was nothing but road rash...but otherwise I was ok. My dad sold that car to the junk yard the next day...

justateacher, it is definitely tragic that people want to skip the rules...I once saw a child fall out of a moving car in an intersection not far from where this happened, she just spilled out into the road...why wasn't she seatbelted in? Maybe it was before child safety locks were created but...it was horrifying. All I could think of was what if someone ran a red light just then...

It is sad that things like this happen everyday...
