Redefining Beauty

The Eye of the Beholder

Redefining Beauty

I have a new conviction

That’s setting me free.

I now look into the mirror

And choose to like what I see.

Society and the media

Construct beauty one way

Yet why should I listen

When its falsity they portray?

Looking at my image

Through the eyes of hate

Never taught me the beauty

Of other’s with like fate.

For that by which I judge me

To others the same will I extend.

So if I only hate my image,

Just how will I see them?

The form of others vary

From beauty’s conventionality

That if I am to value another

I must first begin with me.

Lovely poem, and "Redefining Beauty" is an intriguing title as well. It's true that we must all define beauty in our own words...

Agreed! Have you read the poem Phenomenal Women by Maya Angelou? That's another poem about the recognition that we are dynamic, awesome and powerful. Great poem!

AWESOME! Kate Moss is cute, but I'd only take her out to cheesburger joints if we were dating. That might not do any good though, if she's steady smoking, shooting, or snorting GodSmack heroin.

I never could figure out what the deal was with the skin and bones look; except that the media doesn't want healthy women, and only wants gangster men, or Tiger Woods.

The thing is though is that only WOMEN ever bought into the skin and bones = beauty lie. MEN did NOT buy that. Of course some guys just like really skinny, too skinny to be healthy, women. I've never met any of those guys though.

In "Black" or "Rap" . . . .they call it "music," and I like some of it, but I do not call it music, as there are no musicians. . ... in rap the women most heralded are "thick bitches," and I've got friends, "white" and "Hispanic" guys that are into that too.

"Shit, my old lady is THICK!"

I don't think that I've got a height and or weight proportion or preference. Beggars such as I, can not be choosers! I do always find myself concentrated on the eyes, what comes out of the mouth, and the shape of the butt!
