Side Meat 'n Beans

An old cowpoke’s poor; don’t see a lot of pay

Not much of the green foldin’ kind any way

But at the end of the day when we dust off our jeans

Cookie’s wait with a pot of side meat and beans

A cowboy’s work is a long way from town

When time comes to eat there ain’t no place around

But just look for that chuck wagon, Cookie’s machine

You can bet he be cooking a pot of side meat and beans

A cowboy does a lot of hard work on that range there

He needs his nourishment and looks for three square

And he’ll come a runnin’ like you ain’t never seen

When he smells a pot full of side meat and beans

We wrangle them doggies and burn brands in the hides

We fix them busted fences and the broncos we ride

After a long day of such work, there food in your dreams

Just serve up a big pot of that side meat and beans

We drive herds to market and the chuck follows us there

Cookie sets up camp every day and fixes us three square

But at the end of the day when the slate is all clean

Nobody’s gripping about a pot of side meat and beans

Oh we like a steak, with some hot biscuits and gravy

You can even throw some beans on but make then navy

But after eatin’ all that high falutin’ cuisine

We are quite happy to get back to side meat and beans

We’s raised on this food from the time we could walk

We just want our three squares, some coffee, and talk

But when the time comes and that old supper bell rings

We’ll be a runnin’, lookin’ for that side meat and beans.

I love this poem and Willie's song. In fact it's one of my favorites. Voted up and awesome.

Thanks for the culinary experience!! During the holidays, I often thought of myself as Cookie -- constantly feeding the gang. AND - My heroes have always been cowboys!

I just kinda took all this in, sat back and enjoyed old Willie, the poem, and pics. Very soothing.

Very good Wayne.

Next month my sons and I go javelina hunting in the Arizona desert and I'll set up for campfire cooking with my dutch ovens, much like your picture.

@breakfastpop...A little Willie and some side meat 'n beans...what could be better! WB

@KooKoo88....Thanks so much, I appreciate you stopping by and hope to see you again soon! WB

@Truckstop Sally...It can feel that way sometimes..maybe that's why the beans work so well! LOL! WB

@Kindacrazy...Yeah, that's pretty much was the mood I was in when I wrote it. I was trying to think of a subject of the old west that I had not touched on yet and suddenly I thought of side meat n' beans! Glad you liked it! WB

@WillStarr...Maybe we'll get a rip-roaring hog hunting tale out of that adventure into the wilds...watch out for drugs mules! LOL! WB

Wow beautiful Wayne. Sometimes I think we would all be better off, going back to the good old days.

"..watch out for drugs mules!"

That's the side meat I spoke of! :-)

@Rhonda Waits....Glad you liked it. There is an allure to the old west but I am sure it has nothing to do with that trip to the outhouse on a cold frosty morning! LOL! WB

@WillStarr....Now we are starting to understand why they called it "side meat"....LOL! I hope them boys is tender! WB

Ah, simple vittles that stick to your ribs

No Gray Poupon or starched lobster bibs

A seat by the fire with stars up above

Just like Blazing Saddles, a movie I love!

Wayne, you are one of the few poets that I enjoy reading. Not that I don't enjoy poetry, it's just that in the world of poetry there is......well....a lot to sift through. This one has great cadence. Voted up as always!

@sunflowerbucky...I know exactly what you mean...it's that vague reference to something fleeting that you must read between the lines to find. Won't find that here...I write poetry to tell a story...I am a "lemonade stand poet"! LOL! Glad you liked it Bucky! WB

I was lulled into a reverie by the rhythm of your poem, Wayne, and then began to laugh hysterically as I envisioned that scene in "Blazing Saddles." I know you know which scene I mean.

@drbj...You know, I just may have to go ahead and hook the video of that scene to the is hub. I almost did then I thought that it might be a bit over the top but beans are already over the top! LOL! Thanks so much for the good words! WB

Wayne, I sure loved this! Willie Nelson is a favorite of mine, especially 'My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys'!

Your poem truly plants a picture in my mind of simple pleasures on the trail. And though, I know misery is... a bitter cold outhouse ~ in the dark ~ with the snakes and the other critters looking to get warm... I still cannot help but wishing for those simpler times, even if they did define the word: Work!

Keep'em comin'! I'll keep jinglin' my spurs in appreciation!

Really enjoyed this look back in time via your poem and also the video. Like others, I loved the movie Blazing Saddles. Haha!

@Scarlett My Dear...I did this one almost tongue in cheek but then had to give credence to the fact that side meat and beans fed many pokes over time and they did appreciate it. Glad I could bring out that imagery for you! WB

@Peggy W...Good to see you! Yeah, I need to bring old Slim Pickens on this a tribute on this one! WB

I like side meat and beans, but I don’t eat it. Blame it on the consequences :)) Thanks again for an enjoyable read.
