Side Meat 'n Beans
By: Wayne Brown
An old cowpoke’s poor; don’t see a lot of pay
Not much of the green foldin’ kind any way
But at the end of the day when we dust off our jeans
Cookie’s wait with a pot of side meat and beans
A cowboy’s work is a long way from town
When time comes to eat there ain’t no place around
But just look for that chuck wagon, Cookie’s machine
You can bet he be cooking a pot of side meat and beans
A cowboy does a lot of hard work on that range there
He needs his nourishment and looks for three square
And he’ll come a runnin’ like you ain’t never seen
When he smells a pot full of side meat and beans
We wrangle them doggies and burn brands in the hides
We fix them busted fences and the broncos we ride
After a long day of such work, there food in your dreams
Just serve up a big pot of that side meat and beans
We drive herds to market and the chuck follows us there
Cookie sets up camp every day and fixes us three square
But at the end of the day when the slate is all clean
Nobody’s gripping about a pot of side meat and beans
Oh we like a steak, with some hot biscuits and gravy
You can even throw some beans on but make then navy
But after eatin’ all that high falutin’ cuisine
We are quite happy to get back to side meat and beans
We’s raised on this food from the time we could walk
We just want our three squares, some coffee, and talk
But when the time comes and that old supper bell rings
We’ll be a runnin’, lookin’ for that side meat and beans.
