The media of the past few days has been overwhelmingly flooded with first the news of Bin Laden death followed by the news of his Islam services and burial at sea. Then we began the seesaw aspect of arguing his death and the events which took place that surrounded his death including the collusion of the Pakistani officials in providing a refuse for the hunted terrorist. Along with that the President has been riding that wave of gushing left-wing media praising him for his heroic decision-making and courage during such a tense period.
There are those in the media who go so far as to state that out of all the choices the President faced, he chose the most challenging and the most dangerous in terms of risking the lives of Americans. Some of that is hogwash spin and a bit of that is true. In reality, there were not a lot of choices unless you are simply sitting around brain-storming without constraint. No President in his right mind is going to send in guided missiles or drop airplane loads of bombs on a compound adjacent to a housing area of civilians. Even if it were known that Bin Laden was inside, the choice would be utter stupidity if it created any casualties on the innocent side. No you can quickly rule those out. The President had two real choices…do nothing and wait or follow the action that he did with a surgical strike team focused on precision work. True, there were risks involved but then again it was a military mission which almost always assumes some level of risk to life or limb. For Navy Seals, it was not outside the realm of possibilities.
Of course, then we get to the aftermath. We have an announcement of the death and then we start to hear information that the President and his security team were able to view at least some aspects of the mission via real time broadcasts from helmet cameras. We were told that the mission was to go in and get Bin Laden if he was there in the compound. We were told that the mission stipulation was that the Seal Team could take him dead or alive based on the circumstances at the time on the ground and Bin Laden’s reaction. We were told there was a firefight and as a result of that firefight Bin Laden was killed suffering a wound to the chest and one to the head in the facial area. The dominoes seem to line up and it all spoke well for a military surgical strike operation that was carried off without any loss of American life and the mission was accomplished.
Then the Monday morning press briefing was held and the President’s press secretary held forth answering questions regarding the Bin Laden scenario and attempting to fill in any holes for the journalist. It came out that a young woman who was purported to be a wife of Bin Laden had been used as a human shield and ultimately wounded in the leg. The firefight was mention time and again. Then there was a confirmation that Bin Laden had not been armed. It was around this time that one of the journalists again mentioned the firefight and the fact that Bin Laden was unarmed and asked what constituted the firefight if the opposing party was unarmed? At this point, it was obvious that the press secretary had almost swallowed his tongue if not a full-feathered canary bird. He was at a total loss of words to explain the situation yet the question should have been an obvious one before he even headed toward the podium for the session.
Later pictures, released by Rueters, show at least two Islamic men dead in pools of blood suggesting that they may have been shot but still there was no mention of the couriers who were there with Bin Laden being armed. If these men were not the couriers, were they bodyguards who elected to shoot at the Seal Team and if so, why is that so difficult to explain. It certainly does not violate any secrecy in terms of methods used or tactics employed. That singular event began to undermine some of the credibility associated with the story. Some journalists speculated that the story of the events had passed through so many filters that surely some details that linked the events had been overlooked. At the same time, there was never any of offer to bring forward a military commander who was indeed close to the action and potential may have been privy to the mission report which would have described in great detail what took place. This individual most certainly could have done a better job of briefing this situation than the press secretary who undermined it.
Then, of course, came the icing on the cake or the decision regarding the photos of a dead Bin Laden. That discussion did not have to go on very long before the President put it to rest with his decision to lock up the photos and swallow the key. He cited our compassion as Americans not to gloat and emphasized the importance that such photos, be it only one, not be floating around in the public domain, for fear of the potential issues that it might raise. Never mind the Islamic world does not rely on America to provide them with their facts thus they sit in wait for some real evidence that we indeed did kill this man. Oh, but we did argues the President because we checked his DNA but we are not showing you that either for it just makes no sense. But, on that note, the President did decided that returning to Ground Zero, a place he has avoided like the plague, would be a fitting touch for him in the aftermath of this historic event. Even Bush and Clinton had the good sense to stay away from that event.
So those terrible issues upon which conspiracy so rapidly breeds are indeed alive and well in this historic event. Again, the American people are left to believe what they are told and only that. The government does not want any conspiracy theories but it is doing everything right to create them. So now we have factions yelling “oh yes, he’s dead, the government said that he was, so he is”. And other factions saying something to the effect that the government is simply lying and wanting the American people to believe it like so many of the other little white lies they have told in years past. Suddenly the whole matter is red meat for the wolves and how they feast upon it.
So, this is about the place in the piece where one of you steps forward and says, “Okay, Mr. Wayne, Okay Mr. Smarty Pants Conservative Right-Wing Scribe…remember, it’s good to call them names! What do you think? Well, thanks for asking. Since you did, I’ll toss a couple of thoughts around with you and see how they ride the old brain waves.
One thing that occurs to me early on is that a plan by the government to lie about Bin Laden being dead would not work very well if Bin Laden indeed was not dead. All Bin Laden would have to do is show the world some sign of his existence and the whole thing blows up in the face of the US government and we look like idiots to the world and surely wreck our future credibility. Thus, I don’t see that being a viable option and besides, who would benefit by it except maybe some stupid politician willing to do anything to get some votes. No I can’t buy that approach. So, then Mr. Wayne…you do indeed believe the government did kill Bin Laden? Hang on…now you are putting words in my mouth. Let’s take a different approach.
Let’s say there was a tired old terrorist named Bin Laden who was hiding in his compound just outside the capitol of Pakistan. Let’s say that some in the Pakistani government were aware of his being in that compound at various times but sympathized with his efforts and thus said nothing. Finally, U S Intelligence puts together enough information to be suspicious of this compound but they do not spell that fact out in their discussions with Pakistan. Instead, they operate on the assumption that someone in Pakistan has a communications channel with Bin Laden. So in their discussions, U S officials simply let it be known that they feel they are close to capturing and killing Bin Laden but would entertain the idea of showing mercy if he so chose to cooperate. Let’s just say that information gets relayed back to Bin Laden.
Now, Bin Laden has created an image for himself in the Islamic world as being a warrior who is dedicated to the destruction of the United States. His feats such as 9-11 have certainly gone to great lengths to prove his determination and earn him followers. At the same time, years have past and much water has gone under the bridge. Bin Laden’s health has declined and potentially he may well be in the early stages of renal failure. He needs medical attention on a level that he cannot provide while he is on the run and hiding. He is at a crossroads yet not willing to go claim his virgins as some of his followers have.
Given this circumstance and the awareness that indeed to US is closing in on him, Bin Laden weighs his alternatives. Obviously, he would not make a very desirable public prisoner of the USA. That would cause more issues than it would ever be worth. Instead he must drop out of sight and the only way to do that is to fake his death. Word flows back through channels to Bin Laden’s mentor of past years, the CIA that he is willing to cut a deal. He will come in out of the cold and secretly become an informant of the CIA if certain requirements are met on his behalf. If not, then, if indeed he is to be captured, he is situated to destroy all that is in his possession and the world will never be privy to the potential knowledge which he possess on the terrorist organization which he has created. He will trade his information in complete secrecy for a situation in which his death is faked and his body cannot be recovered. In addition, he wants the necessary medical care his renal condition demands and a comfortable and secure place in seclusion to spend the rest of his days. The CIA gains the benefit of his knowledge and he in turn extends his life and gets off of the merry go round at the same time.
The CIA likes the idea and sees benefit in it. The wheels start turning to put the necessary chain of evidence in place. The CIA begins working with the Seal Team on a secret operation to take Bin Laden down. The members of the team are sworn to secrecy both in what they see, hear, and can divulge in the aftermath. Though the media will report that a team of over forty Seals raided the compound, only six will actually ever be in the presence of Bin Laden. The remaining force involved will be various members of Special Forces units aided by civilian CIA specialists such as helicopter pilots. Those individuals will be engaged in secondary security and the search of other areas of the compound. The Seal Team has orders to fire on Bin Laden’s bodyguards and any other security surrounding him but only the on-scene CIA commander can issue the order to kill Bin Laden if the situation is indeed a trick. Thus, a firefight of sorts does take place in which those guarding Bin Laden are eliminated. In fact, the scenario requires they be eliminated. The woman used as a human shield and shot in the leg is actually a CIA operative who has coordinated this event from inside the compound. She is known to Bin Laden. She is wounded for effect which will allow her an avenue to depart the scene under medical care and then quickly drop out of sight afterwards. Meanwhile the “shooting” of Bin Laden is carried out but the individual is not Bin Laden but another of his followers. Bin Laden is then disguised as the other man and both him and the body are taken from the scene to the helicopter for retreat.
In the aftermath, the CIA controls the cleansing of the fake Bin Laden body and prepares it for what they know will be a controversial burial at sea but that burial will in effect hide the fact that the body was not that of Bin Laden. Few could tell anyway since the victim was conveniently shot in the face so disfiguring him as to not readily produce a recognizable face. Meanwhile the focus of those on the carrier is on the funeral and burial of Bin Laden. Under that cover, the CIA ferries the living party which they picked up off of the vessel indicating to commanders that the man is an informant and will be returned to his homeland. This then allows Bin Laden to be taken to his secure refuge and the process to begin whereby he provides the CIA with the intelligence necessary to ferret out the chief operatives and effectively close down the organization. Meanwhile, Bin Laden becomes a martyr and returns to the life of a quiet Islamic receiving the necessary medical attention and the lavish lifestyle which he has come to enjoy.
Do I believe this scenario? Not necessarily but given the cards which are being played in the explanation and surrounding the events, it is not beyond the realm of possibilities. We can only wonder. Oh, I know, there is one more thing that you are anxious to know before I go so I’ll go ahead and put it on the table. “What’s to keep the members of Seal Team 6 from spilling their guts?” Really, that is not that hard to figure out. When one elects the life of a Seal, they embrace the dangers associated with it. One obvious one is that the missions are very dangerous and could easily cost one their life if the made the wrong type of mistake…talking about certain events might well increase the odds that those mistakes could happen. Seals can figure that out for themselves.
What you choose to believe here has a lot to do with how much you trust your government and the various agencies that make it up. For some, it’s a slam dunk, for others, it’s questionable, and then for others the dog just won’t hunt. You have to decide where you land.
