Sample Complaint Letter to Principal or School Board about Lice
Lice are not meant to be hair accessories. They are a huge inconvenience and can even cause emotional distress. Thousands of valuable hours of school time are missed each year due to the hassle of treating and removing lice.
Parenting is stressful enough without having to spend hours of your time removing lice nits from your child's hair. Treating lice can be frustrating, costly and just downright difficult for both you and your child.
Unfortunately, lice makes uninvited visits to elementary schools every year. Sometimes lice will make recurrent visits. if your school seems to have a serious lice issue, perhaps it is time to write a complaint letter to the principal. If he/she does not address the issue, take the complaint to the school board.
A complaint letter demonstrates your strong feelings about this issue. It can also provide some time for the principal to think about a plan before responding. Below are some some sample letters to help you write your own letter. If possible, try to type the letter. Also, write it using business letter format.

Sample Complaint Letter to Principal from Single Parent
Dear Mr. Sanchez,
Thank-you for your service to Pecan Ridge Elementary School. I know it is not an easy job, and I am grateful for your time and dedication to the community. Overall, I have been happy with the school. I love my daughter's teacher, and I am impressed with the lego robotics program. I am grateful Hannah is at Pecan Ridge.
Unfortunately, however, I have been upset with the lice outbreaks. We have now had three times this year that lice has spread in her class. I know that sometimes this happens and there is not much that can be done. However, after the third outbreak, I feel that perhaps there are additional steps the school can take to help prevent the spreading of lice.
Mr. Sanchez, as a single parent, dealing with lice has been a big hassle for me. I have had to miss work to treat the lice. In addition, Hannah has now had to miss 2 1/2 days of school. I am also on a tight budget, and the lice treatment is not something I need to be paying for.
I am kindly asking you to please consider all options for trying to prevent the spreading of lice. Perhaps we need to have daily screenings before children are even allowed into the classroom. I know that would be time consuming, but it would prevent more missed school.
I am more than happy to discuss this issue with you further. You can reach me at (501)279-1234. Alternatively, feel free to e-mail me at email@example.com. Thank-you!
Sample Complaint Letter to Principal From Parent With Large Family
Dear Mrs. McNoodle,
My children attend Western Hills Elementary. I have twin daughters (Sam and Jen) in 3rd grade, a son (Tye) in 1st grade and my youngest (Charlie) is in kindergarten. I am concerned about the recent lice outbreaks, and would like to address this matter with you.
It is only November, and already we have had to deal with three lice outbreaks. As a parent with four children, this has been stressful for our family. It has been an inconvenience and even caused us to miss an important doctor's appointment. All of my children have missed at least one day of school due to lice. In addition, the expense of the lice treatment is hurting our budget.
I would like to kindly ask you to please consider new policies on how to keep lice away from the classroom. This might mean having to seal all book bags in garbage bags, screening all children before class, and even offering preventive shampoo for free. I'm sure many parents would be happy to make a small donation so that all families can be provided with free preventive (herbal) shampoo.
Thank-you in advance for addressing this issue. Over, we have been pleased with the school. I am pleased with the teachers and staff, and it has been a great fit for our family.
I am more than happy to discuss this with you if you would like. Please feel free contact me at (983)123-3453. Have a great day!
