Seeking Silence

I sense the tide is building,
and ocean's waves are rushing
increasing in intensity
to wash away this city

I speak and cry to thee
with every ounce of fervency
that I hold within my soul;
with every breathe I breathe

The sea is unforgiving,
conforming to your likeness,
so cold and unrelenting,
I cannot seem to fight this

Bind my arms and legs
in chains of darkened water,
and speak into my eyes,
transform me to a martyr

I die for you alone,
so please just let me go,
swept under by the flow
of every dream I've known

What if those inner instincts we often choose to ignore
are truly instilled by something greater than all we are?
What if the heart could whisper, speak, scream it's desires
and we could know that we must pursue them entirely?

They say that love is like chocolate, an addiction, a craving,
nothing more than a need for comfort the soul has been lacking,
then why is it that after the withdrawals have been ended,
we're still brought to tears at the subtlest memory or scent?

So much of what we believe to be real is given conditionally,
and may shatter so suddenly, leaving us wondering how
we ever put so much faith in a race built on hypocrisy,
for the greatest weakness of all, remains our humanity

~~~~~~~
Darling, when was the last time
you reflected on the past
that you shared with me,
or the things that could have been;
the things we never did together,
because we couldn't sacrifice
just the smallest part of our pride?
Our hearts just couldn't connect
on a level that was right
Maybe it was never meant to be,
but maybe time will never tell,
because time will never know
We chose a road we can't backtrack
to create another path, or a lasting smile
I wish to God that time could flow backwards
or in reverse, if only for a while,
so that I could find that fork in the road
way back when, before we fell
into that sickening cycle, into that hell
that we called love, that we called life
Chaos seems to be the only certain thing,
while everything else will cease to be,
becoming lost in twisted memory
What is the color of despair?
They say green is the color of will, or of envy
Yellow, the color of fear, or bananas? I prefer bananas.
Black, the color of hearts, and of moonless nights
Red, ranging from passion to hate, we bleed it just the same
Rainbows, they represent gays and God's promise, and melt down into black
Despair has no color, for it has no will, no fear, no passion, no life
I fear that my green has lost its red, giving way to yellow and black
Save me from the pain of color
The dancing of death
swirling, surrounding
Autumn gone, winter come,
softly snowing ashes,
encasing cold beginnings
Shadows feast on metal
in rapid rusting fashion,
paint chipping and falling
to the floor, from fading walls
as time flows by in haste,
you dare not look upon his face,
mesmerized by the sound
of an ageless blade being dragged
across the bloodied ground
and you feel the wretched aura
drawing nearer to your heart
of an ancient reaper's horror
lost somewhere in Silent Hill
Ben, I envy you. Really green. =) I lack in understanding love feelings in general, so I always get attached to people who express it so colorfully and deep. I have this synesthesia condition when your senses are totally messed up, words morph into music which morphs into colors and so forth, and your beautiful poems create such a display of colors and sounds for me - it's magic out of this world! =)
"Red, ranging from passion to hate, we bleed it just the same"
You have so much to say. Thank you for sharing this part of it with us.
You always do a good job Ben. I especially liked your piece about instincts. I prefer bananas too :)
One of your best works Ben, such a fierce sense of fire building and raging within one's soul. Wonderfully done!
I could hear dark chaos and war, such a sense of forboding. Interesting to listen to that on such a sunny bright calm Sunday morning.
this makes e ache just a little
we're still brought to tears at the subtlest memory or scent?
My favorite line in all its beautiful truth is "...inner instincts we often choose to ignore are truly instilled by something greater..." You asked it as a question and I repeat it as an answer. Stop ignoring those inner instincts and let something greater take control.
