Shadows within darkness........

I saw the shadows pass over his face
and recede into memory
"I turned nineteen ...... twenty .....and twenty one
in a place called Viet Nam........
Yes and there was an order to my life
then .......unknown to me before
Crawling through the tunnels
and melting into the monsoons
And then he told me his life story
Left in a motel room for four days
He was four
With his twin brother
and two sisters
Foster home: ......slave wages on
a farm
Sexual abuse
emotional
desert
And then........He picks up his
seventh grandchild and
guffaws at her while she giggles
and then I realize
something
My best friend made it
home

Painful memories are often bitter sweet, yet to close the door and move forward feels awful sweet. I'm happy to read your best friend made it home. Home is somewhere often filled with fond memories for many, let's close the door for good and leave the skeletons lay to rest from our boyhood past. Voted Up and awesome my poetic friend.

I knew a young man who'd just returned from Vietnam. He was 27 and I was 41 and we became friends. He hardly talked, really, but communicated much. I wrote a couple of poems about him. Nothing so deep as this, ahorseback. But it touches a spot in my heart. Thank you for sharing this. It is a story of your friend's (and your own, I suspect) personal triumph over and beyond those experiences and you've captured so much with so few words. His went way back before that war. WOW. - Leaves me breathless, almost. Your title is almost a poem in itself. . .

Your poems are more then amazing. They give feelings to people. How many poems can give feelings to people?

How many poets can give feelings to people? Not many. You have a great gift. Thank you for sharing them.

Yes, I've noticed there are many among us here, many who are survivors of many kinds of trials, as well as the one your friend, Jim, survived. Perhaps it is just part of this life. I dunno. But it seems that an authentic life has usually met and triumphed over hardships of some kind or another. If we as fellow humans had more empathy, perhaps it would minimize some of the unjustified animosity which also prevails, which may mostly be overflow of unresolved personal issues, hurts and frustrations.

Anyway - this poem so beautifully says what it is to have met and conquered those demons. And that's the bottom line for a life, perhaps.

Nellieanna , Yes it is empathy that is missing , perhaps evolved into selfishness , And yet most of us are flawed at best and to be sure it is views like yours that will guide us all! Thank you for that!...ED..:-}
