Be Mindfull of Shapeshifters..........

The native can change from one living
spirit unto other
Altering their image as if it
wasn't any bother

Shape shifter that you are ....tell me
what to write
A challenge from the eyes of the desert
give us both meaning tonight

Drum circles sound a ceremony
chanting in the valley of the gods
Journeying down the dirt paths as I
consider the odds

He stands at the railing at the
Navajo center staring me down
Mirrored glasses and black hat with
silver buckles all around

Stoic .... icy he watches as I look out at
the desert...... he silently fumes
I can tell he isn't happy ..........but yet
our journey resumes

Yet I am not the calvary nor are you
the grower of corn
Isn't it all about tourism ....which hat will
we adorn

No .....you are not to be my slave ... and I'm never
going to be your master
But are we our brothers keeper
on the reservations of disaster

And this mirrored reflection between us
only amplifies the distance
There's something new in the air about
an old styled resistance

Wow, changing times, changing roles, changing perceptions, all mingled with spirituality and the fierce pride of the natives. This is awesome writing capturing an essence so difficult to put into word, but you have captured this superbly. Steadfast proud tradition, rites of passage, handed down for thousands of years, to come to this, fodder for tourists! "But are we our brothers keeper on the reservations of disaster" A very resentful reliance on each other captured in that "stoic..icy" stare.

Ahorseback...you are the master. Thank you for taking me to this place and for explaining where it has been and what it now, sadly comes down to. I will come back to this hub again as it provides a very powerful read.

ahorseback, this is a wonderful capture of this cultural struggle. And I love the way you wrote it so simply yet elegantly. I have sat in those drum circles and know the feeling and desire. I really believe this will forever be enshrined in your top ten best ever poems.

This reminded me of when I collected drift wood and would wittle a shape out of it..it was a amazing what I thought I wanted to carve would turn out to be something completely different. Very beautiful hub with deep meaning.

My friend, I really like this! Wonderful prose and bit mindful that some who believe in shapeshifters also are the hoo doo of the lower parishes of Louisiana. Voted you up and beautiful!

Shapeshifter, a concept I first ran into on Star Trek of all places.I'll have to look more into it.I get the feel of it here but I need to grasp it more. Or is that the reason I am not a poet?

Great poem. I'm very interested in Native American culture and where it stands today. The message in this poem is a relevation, as well.

Hyphenbird , Thank you so much ! I often wonder at mans very nature . Are we doomed to repeat over and over the same mistakes in time ? Are we capable of lifting this dead weight of diversity from our shoulders . Of wars, of hatred and prejudging each other!....:-}

Hi Sunnie , perhaps we dont allow ourselves the simple pleasure of just letting the shape of the wood decide its own finish design or the day to just be what it will ! We dont know how to just take it easy any longer!.....:-}
