Skyler, My Cockatiel Miracle - A Short Story

Gray Cockatiel

Miracles Do Happen

This is a true story and is something that has “stuck” with me over the last 25 years. Did you ever have something small and seemingly insignificant happen to you, but it was really significant enough to have changed your life forever? I guess this is one of those times.

It all started when a boyfriend of mine, before I met my husband, decided to buy me a cockatiel for my birthday. He new I loved birds and I had been talking about getting one. Well, I decided that one bird would get lonely and would need a friend. So I came home with two young cockatiels. So came to be Skyler and Daisy. Skyler was a male and was mainly gray with orange cheeks and Daisy was a female who was solid white with bright orange cheeks. They made such a cute couple and they got along very well.

Skyler and Daisy's New Home

My dad knew what an animal lover I was and new that I didn’t like to see anything in a cage, so he built an awesome “home” for Skyler and Daisy. It was about 5’ tall, 5’ long and about 4’ deep. I went out in the woods and came home with the perfect tree limbs to put in their new home for them to fly up and perch on. They were young birds and I was told that I should take them out daily and pet and feed them to tame them. I was also told that I should “clip” their wings so they couldn’t fly away. Well, I had some help with the wing clipping as I was afraid I would hurt them, and I would take them out of their home everyday when I got home from work.

Skyler, Daisy and I became good friends and they would greet me everyday as I came home from work. I lived by myself and as I would eat dinner, they would have their own plate on the table with some bread, seeds and other treats just for them. They would hop over to me, jump up on my feet and climb their way up to my shoulders where they would sit and “talk” to me.

Skyler and his Medicine

Within a few months, Skyler contracted an eye infection and I had taken him to the veterinarian. He instructed me to put this salve in Skyler’s eye once a day. He didn’t really like it, but he did enjoy all the petting and treats he received afterwards. Well this was a warm day in early spring and I decided to leave my front door open to let some air into the house. I wasn’t worried as both Skyler and Daisy’s wings had recently been clipped and they had never tried to fly out the door before. But of course, this day would be different.

As I sat in a chair on the other side of the room from the open door, I was holding Skyler and just about to put the salve in his eye when there was a loud bang! The wind was blowing outside and had blown something down on my porch. Well the loud sound startled Skyler and up he went towards that door like he knew exactly where it was and what he was doing! Out the door he went and right up into the trees in the backyard. I wondered how he could fly that far or that high! The vet had clipped his wings just a week ago! Luckily Daisy was still in her house, so out the door I went running after Skyler.

Where is Skyler?

The trees in the back yard blended right in with the trees from the woods behind the house. I could hear Skyler calling, but I couldn’t see him. I ran in the house and put Daisy in a small cage that I would take them to the vet in. I sat the cage with Daisy inside in the backyard, hoping Skyler would fly down to her. They “talked” to each other for hours, but he never came to her.

I walked around in the woods out back for hours, looking up into the trees trying to find a glimpse of my little Skyler. He blended in with the trees so well, that I could never spot him. As I am walking around in the woods, looking up into the tall trees calling his name, this little girl rides her bike into the woods. There is no trail that goes back there, where did she come from? She asks me what I am doing and I explain to her that my pet bird has flown up into the trees and I am trying to get him to come back down. She asks what he looks like and I describe him to her; that he is gray and has bright orange cheeks and a “top knot” of feathers on his head. She helps me look for a while and then says she has to get home for dinner and rides away.

A Storm is Coming

Now it has been several hours that I have been out there and it is starting to get dark. The wind is blowing and I am not even sure that I can still hear Skyler. I can’t give up! Where will he go? Will he know what to eat? What am I going to do? I am twenty something years old, I can’t stand out here and cry like little girl, can I? It began to rain, hard, and the lightening was coming closer and closer. The thunder was so loud it would almost make me jump out of my skin. My poor Skyler, he had to be wet and cold. Was he scared? I had to go inside, the lighting was right on top of me now. I sat up until way after mid-night worried to death about my poor little bird being outside in the storm.

Now, here I will say that I did believe in God, as a child, but, only because I thought I had to. I was not brought up going to church, I think my mom took my to church twice, but she told me I had to say my prayers each night. I won’t go into my childhood, I will just suffice it to say that it was not a pleasant one. I would ask God often, to help me with the situation I was in at home, but nothing ever changed, so I wasn’t really sure there was a God.

I Started to Pray

I went to bed and I could still hear the storm outside. I started to cry…here I was 20 plus years old and I am crying like a baby. Then I started to pray. I asked God if he would just take care of Skyler, I would never doubt his existence again. I prayed and prayed, I was praying for my Skyler, not for myself. I prayed until I finally fell asleep.

The next day was a Sunday and I had slept a little late, as I had been awake most of the night. I had just gotten dressed when there was a knock on my door. It was the same little girl that had ridden her bicycle into the woods and tried to help me find Skyler the day before. She said she thought she had found my bird! I followed her while she rode her bike back to her house. As we went into the house, her dad met us at the door. He asked me if I had lost my cockatiel. As soon as I answered him, Skyler heard my voice and started calling to me. They had found my poor little Skyler! The dad started laughing and said there was no doubt that was my bird.

The dad told me that he was outside early that morning looking to see what damage had been done by the storm. He said as he was looking around he notice this odd looking bird fly right by him and around to the back of the house. He said he new it wasn’t an ordinary bird so he went around back to see where it went. He said that as he rounded the corner of his house, he saw his cat with something in his mouth! It was my little Skyler! He told me that he grabbed the cat and as he did the cat let go of the bird. He then took the bird into the house to see if he was injured. Amazingly, he was just fine! I thanked him and his little girl over and over again. Then I took Skyler home.

I Believe in Miralces

To think about how everything happened, it had to be a miracle in disguise. First of all, the bird should not have been able to fly, at all, much less up into the tall trees. Second of all, the little girl should not have been riding her bike in the woods, there were no trails back there. Thirdly, why did Skyler fly right by the father of the little girl that helped me look for him that evening? Fourth, the cat catching Skyler, should have injured him severely, if not killed him.

Now this may sound a bit silly, but that is what convinced me that there was a God and that he did care, not only about me, but about every animal that he created. When I prayed to God, I was not praying for myself, I was praying for Skyler and I think that made all the difference. I still think back on those events and know that sometimes things are not going to go my way. The things that happened to me as a child, had to happen and made me a stronger person that I had to be later in life. God reassured me that he was there and that he did hear my prayers by saving my little Skyler.

Thank you poetryman! I think that is a truly wonderful idea! I really think that is why my prayers was answered that night. I was praying for the bird's safety, not thinking of myself.

It went through my head that the cockeyed miracle is the best kind when I saw the word "Cockatiel".

I am glad you got a little blessing. Be sure to pay it forward by praying for world peace or something! I have heard some folks say when something fortunate happens that they are going out to buy a lottery ticket. Though I don't quite believe things work that way I don't have much problem with those who do. I like to think that we can increase the quantity and quality of blessings in the world when we pray for others.

I also have a good story about my parrot. I read this story while I was searching for help online to recuse my bird. This story of course had me in tears. But however I too got my bird back after spending 4 days and 3 nights, stanly ( my parrots name) in a 100 ft. tree and me on the street in my car. I just couldn't seem to leave him for to long length of time. On Monday I came to the conclusion I had to call a crane company. After several calls I found Purple Crane out of Pomona to do the job. They were there within 45 min. The crane operator was wonderful and very skilled. Happy to say my stanly is safe at home with me and we are both resting.

Hi Victoria! I agree, God had to have a hand in returning Skyler to me. Skyler lived another couple of years, he got some type of bird disease that there is no cure for. I was so sad. I had Daisy for another 4 years. I married my husband after 2 years of dating and then got pregnant another year later. I decided to give Daisy to one of my best friends. The dust, feathers and seeds were just too much for a new baby. Daisy lived for at least another 5 years after that. I'm so glad you enjoyed my hub. Thank you for the kind comment and votes. I always enjoy hearing from you! Have a wonderful day! :)

Thanks for this. It made my morning. Many votes.

Hello Sharkye! Being single at the time, Skyler and Daisy were my best friends. I was so distraught at the thought of Skyler being out in that terrible storm. I just knew that he was cold, wet and scared. My prayers were not for me, but for my little bird. That may sound silly to some people, but maybe not to another animal lover. Thank you for your kind words and wonderful comment! Have a great day! :)

Hi moonlake! I'm sorry your sister-in-law never found her cockatiel. Between the storm, hitting the window and the cat, I think it was truly a miracle that Skyler was returned to me. I'm glad you enjoyed my story and thank you for the comment, vote and share! Have a great day! :)

Lovely story! As an animal lover I have spent many hours in my life hunting through snow and storms and woods for lost pets and farm stock. It is always heartbreaking to lose them, and so joyous to find them, alive and well. I could feel your happiness through your writing. :)

Hi Peggy! It's funny how such a small things can make such a large impact on a person's life. In my mind, there was just no way that all of these occurances could have been just coincidence or luck. I knew that the man upstairs was showing me that he was there and listening to me. I will have to see if I can find some of Mr. Herriot's stories, I am sure I would love them! Thank you for your kind comment and votes. You know I always enjoy hearing from you! :)

That is an amazing set of coincidences and so happy to hear that you got your little Skyler back. I loved reading books like All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot. We are all interconnected on this planet with the animals of all types as well as plant life. Mr. Herriot was a country vet and reading all of his interactions with animals made for nice stories. Your story was equally enthralling. Nice that this episode strengthened your belief in God. Up votes and sharing.

Hello Hyphenbird! Cockatiels are such smart birds, I was really surprised. Skyler and Daisy were such good pets and companions. I never realized that birds actually had personalities unti I had these two. Skyler died a couple of years later from a rare bird disease. I had to give up Daisy before our daughter was born because of all the bird feathers, dust, etc. I gave her to a good friend and he had her for years. I am sorry to hear about your little Hyphen passing, I know you miss her/him. Thank you for stopping in and commenting. I always enjoy hearing from you.

I love your true story about your miracle. Cockatiels are lovely little birds and much more intelligent than many people think. My own precious Hyphen died several months ago. He was my best friend for 21 years. I miss that cheerful voice so much. I am sl glad you found Skyler and had him for a long time.

The story is wonderful! Your writing technique is great. I especially smiled when you described your age once and yet again to demonstrate your emotions conflicting with your maturity.

As far as the content, you have touched on a subject that many experience on a daily basis: God doesn't always work real loud. He is so moved by little acts of sincerity that encompass His greatness. I'm so happy you have been touched by His greatness.

Vote up and following you.

I gotta say this story really brought a tear to my eye. I have owned 2 cockatiels before, and they do have a mind of their own. They can be a strong bird in a way. I know mine were. I am so glad all worked out for you! I can't figure out how he flew like that either though. I often trimmed my birds feathers and never had that happen before. how odd. Maybe the vet missed the main ones. Nice happy ending. voted up!

I believe but it did not help me find my cockatiel that flew out the door. The bird was 2 rooms away and never came out of the room he was in. Just as my daughter opened the door to go out, he flew out into the living room and out the door. We followed him across a large pasture full of cows and a bull and finally lost him in the woods on the far side. We never did find him.
