Sleep, hold me like a lover

Sleep, hold me like a lover
Until the morning --
when I awake shall leave your breast
Kiss me sweetly while I rest

Deliver your medicine to cure the pain
of my lonely strife
the intoxication that makes more bearable
the elements of my life

Sleep, hold me like a lover
Protecting me
from the night's harms

Embrace me
and let us embrace each other warmly
like they who find such peace,
such remedy, in each other's arms

Sleep, hold me like a lover
encompassing my fear
touching, soothing, reassuringly near

Embellish my dreams with your breath
and sleep, hold me like a lover
so that I won't know

I sleep alone

my god this is art and these are beautifully crafted words in the hands of a pure poet!

Yes sleep is like a drug to me too - but now that I have discovered your hubs I will not be sleeping as much.

This is the first of your efforts that I have read. It is lovely.

"Sleep, hold me like a lover, so that I won't know I am alone"...a beautiful line any poet would be proud of.

Thanks for finding me so I may follow you.

Christopher, thank you for stopping by and reading and for your kind comment! I don't really consider myself a poet but I do make the attempt every so often. When it does happen, it is nice to hear that someone enjoyed something I have written. Thank you, again!

wow wow wow! I feel I can relate to this one. I love where sleep can take me, far far away from the pain of reality. Thank you leafy den.

Thank you, Coconut Concubine! It is nice to hear when others can relate to what I have written. Reality can be painful at times and sleep does take us to different places where we can renew, revise and look at things in a new way. It is no wonder there are some belief systems which teach that sleep IS the reality and our waking life is the dream.
