Sleepless Night- a poem
By Tony DeLorger © 2011
Dreams fragment and tug at my heart, sleep flowing in and out,
ever lapsing into awareness, confusion like shallow breath.
Thrashing and groaning, sheets wet with perspiration,
the mind addled with conflict misunderstood.
Like lying on cactus, each prick driven into paper skin,
life escaping from tiny perforations, leaking, purging thoughts.
Wasted bliss stolen, reckless mind given to flight,
absolved of sanity, imbued with fancy.
Fixed momentarily, I rise and wander, stumble and find light,
cool water half cognisance, droplets gathering to find gravity.
Mirror stares back with disdain, dark eyes flickering to focus,
sleep missing, hiding, relentless teasing.
Collapsing to dull matted sheets, mind soaring downward,
Alarm bellows, ripping through damp air, jolting waves,
body leaping to half-consciousness, day beckons another trap,
another sleepless night.
