Sleep's Elusion (Poem)
Sleep eludes as I try to chase it
Time tick-tocks by, as the ceiling becomes my friend
Each inch of its breadth studied
Each shadow claimed as a new ally
What awoke me from my slumber?
The same thing that halts a return thereto?
Has worry come a-knocking at my door?
Is God prompting me to rise and pray?
My puny mind flits
Never settling on one definite location
These early hours restrict my cognitive reason
I want to understand
Lying still it all seems futile…pointless…desperate.
I move slowly as I ponder
My bride sleeping gracefully beside me
Not wanting to wake her, I remain
Trapped between the dream-world and a new day
Bound with invisible chains
My day ahead and those behind
Tumble like waterfalls through my mind
A disassembled puzzle that never gets completed
Yet the picture is there
Only to be seen in the light of day
When half asleep and half awake
The image of my life seems so unfocused
So why? No purpose is served here
And yet, sleep still eludes…
