Society At Play

It wasn’t a murder

as the evidence would show,

the young man died over a week ago,

face down, on the ground,

and it took a week just to be found,

that was society at play,

as the detective began cursing

at an over-dose victim in the alley-way,

finger pointing, lips pursing,

demanding from the cadaver

a little more cooperation and consideration,

looking for a solid explanation,

in fact, it was a command,

the detective continued berating the dead man,

as two housing authority cops stared,

in amazement they glared,

the detective’s anger would stack,

he was on a verbal attack,

where the hell did you fire up,

where is the fresh track,

why are you so young?

It wasn’t the actual death

that caused the spark,

it wasn’t even the aggravation

of not finding the needle mark,

it was wondering how the young

could die that way,

it had to be society at play,

he didn’t know what to feel,

you get called to a place,

and discover that the dead was real,

then staring into the young man’s face,

too surreal,

drugs can make the young fall,

and it gets worse with every successive call,

and at that moment,

another body was found,

at the end of the hall,

these projects just got so dim,

the detective wondered

what was more grim,

to be shot down with a high

caliber weapon,

like a dog,

or an overdose of drugs,

like a fat, greedy, hog,

losing the young had to be a sin,

nobody could win,

then he looked up and saw,

another young boy with a syringe,

he was holding it tight,

it was a sad sight,

his emotions would pin,

the boy was young and thin,

but on his face,

was a ridiculous half-grin.

Thought provoking poem that brings up deep questions.. who is to blame... the society ? It is a shame ... that the young become victims of its greed and corruption! Beautifully written! Be a blessing!

I really enjoyed it. It mustered up frustration in me at the end. I wanted to grab the last ginning guy and shake some sense into him on behalf of the detective but we all know that it doesn't work.

I credit you that you can portray what you have seen in such powerful ways. I enjoy looking thru the shadows into the world that you are exposed to. I hope that it changes things for someone out there.

Good job. Its sad but I think if this were a real case of someone dying, the people who did notice would not admit to it because they were a part of the society at play or a part that thinks they deserve to die cause they bring it on themselves. It is a tragic and wasteful situation and I think you did a great job portraying that.

A great tragedy of course, but the predominant mood I took away this time was not as dark and intense as in previous poems. What gripped me more was the officer's puzzlement and frustration at not being able to determine the cause. An unsettling feeling...well done.

How have I missed so many of your works? Each time I read one I think 'this is the best yet' but you go one to write more.

Your writing is so true to life. I could feel the policeman's anger and share it. "Society at play", when will it stop?

Voted up, useful, awesome, and interesting.
