Spinal Meningitis Makes You Smile

David was the king of the down boys
He'd always make jokes, "...Am I gonna die?"
We used to sneak out of class to get high
Everyday day hiding behind the oleanders
David was the king of making things easier
He always made me laugh and go back to school
He always made me laugh, whenever we got high
We used to sit there laughing, he and I
He was always scribbling or sketching
Little poems in a little black notebook
He'd say, " High school is a like a virus
But these pages are my papyrus..."
He'd take another hit, just a little bit
Pass it to me, then turn up the boom box
Then we'd sing along as the radio played
" Smile all mighty Jesus, spinal meningitis
...Got me down...smile all mighty Jesus,
...spinal meningitis, got me down..."

The radio played from upstairs in David's room
" Am I gonna see God mommy?...Am I gonna die? "

David didn't always say what he wanted
To me or anyone because it was his way
He always made me laugh, whenever we got high
Then one day he started rambling at me,
" You know what Blake, it has been a long time
since I had a friend. That's okay I know what is
and what isn't mine. But there's something new
about the moon, I feel it changing in me. Why?"
He shrugged his shoulders lighting a smoke,
" There's something new about to bloom,
and I think I might catch my ship. Take it up
and get myself a better ticket to another trip."
He'd take another hit and ask me to finish it
Pass it to me, then turn up the boom box
Then we'd sing along as the radio played
" Smile all mighty Jesus, spinal meningitis
...Got me down...smile all mighty Jesus,
...spinal meningitis, got me down..."

The radio played from upstairs in David's room
" Am I gonna see God mommy?...Am I gonna die?
...It really hurts mommy ...please don't let me die.
... The water's moving through my spine mommy. "

David was the king of making things easier
He always made me promise not to quit school
He always made me laugh and then act real cool
He always made me laugh, whenever we got high
He looked at me and caught me staring
He laughed out loud and knew I was scared
He punched my shoulder hard and coughed,
" Don't worry about it dude. Don't worry about me.
The world's not learning, but the world turns round
The world's not burning, the world's got me down."
He lit up that last fat joint and then he
Passed it to me, turning up the boom box
He always made me laugh, when we went home
The next day there was no school, it was a holiday
And that day was the day he died, the down boys
We all sang along as the radio stations played
" Smile all mighty Jesus, spinal meningitis
...Got me down...smile all mighty Jesus,
...spinal meningitis, got me down..."

Wow I got viral meningitis in '06, they didn't tell me I was dying in the hospital, so I didn't worry about, but the pain was indescribable. That was a beautiful poem, it really touched something in me, also liked the ten bad examples of knowledge and wisdom.

Hi Blake4d,

I came on your page to ask you about vortexes in Sedona, a woman in my metaphysics class was discussing it. But I read this instead, because my younger brother had meningitis when he was 5 yrs old. He lived, but I remember my parents telling me and my best friend (who I think I already told you about her loss) and we just refused to believe it. He's bipolar and he used to have convulsions when he had fevers while very young, and he's been a mess most of his life. You are a strong person, you have been through a lot. It's so sad and scary to lose a friend, and to know what to say. I remember the last few weeks my friend was in this plane, and there were so many things NOT to talk about. It made me realize we think too much about the future, instead of today, while it's here and now. That was a great poem. Keep on writing!
